Overview
The Peer Support Specialist draws on their lived experience with recovery, mental health, or substance use challenges to provide genuine, compassionate support during times of crisis. Working collaboratively with a team including a Licensed Mental Health Worker and the broader crisis response team, this role fosters understanding, reduces stigma, and encourages individuals to pursue recovery and mental health stabilization. Over time, this position may transition into a 24/7 rotating schedule to ensure individuals and families have access to support whenever it is needed most.
Responsibilities
- Provide peer-led support to individuals experiencing mental health crises, addiction struggles, or behavioral health concerns, utilizing crisis intervention techniques.
- Assist clients in developing coping strategies through motivational interviewing and mentoring approaches that promote self-efficacy.
- Collaborate with clinical teams to coordinate care plans, ensuring client needs are met with sensitivity and respect.
- Document interactions accurately within Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems, maintaining confidentiality and compliance with privacy standards.
- Offer guidance on available community resources, housing options, employment support, and other social services to foster independence.
- Respond promptly to crisis situations by managing de-escalation efforts and implementing crisis management protocols.
- Support clients in building resilience through behavioral health education, addiction counseling techniques, and peer mentoring.
Requirements
- Lived experience with mental health recovery, addiction recovery, or behavioral health challenges is essential; previous peer support experience is highly valued.
- Some knowledge of crisis intervention strategies and crisis management procedures.
- Some understanding of behavioral health principles, mental health counseling techniques, and social work practices.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to motivate and empower others through motivational interviewing and mentoring.
- Familiarity with Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems for documentation purposes.
- Ability to remain calm under pressure during crisis situations and effectively manage behavioral health emergencies.
- Certification or training will be required upon hire
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $ $21.00 per hour
Expected hours: 40 per week
