    DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM AIDE ROLE

    Job Summary: The Program Aide will be an essential team member for the homeless shelter program at Jarvie Memorial Family Lodge. This role involves a variety of responsibilities, including program aide work, cooking duties, entry-level casework, and crisis resource management. Training opportunities will be provided in these areas, and Program Aides will work together to cover vacations, sick times, and holidays.

    Key Responsibilities:
    • Ensure a safe communal living environment for residents by encouraging voluntary compliance with house rules and policies.
    • Document incidents of non-compliance with house rules and policies, as well as any safety concerns, using required procedures for reporting process.
    • Maintain linens and hygiene supplies for residents, laundering clothing and bedding as needed, and recording comfort care items when distributed.
    • Provide supportive care to residents experiencing personal crises, making referrals to case managers or community resources when necessary.
    • Keep facilities clean and organized, including cleaning bathrooms, replacing supplies, emptying trash, and conducting periodic walking inspections of all areas of the facility.
    • Respond to emergency situations, making independent decisions within policy guidelines, and provide crisis intervention and security procedures as needed.
    • Work closely with other staff, case managers, advocates, and program directors on matters related to client plans, goals, objectives, safety, and other issues.
    • Treat all staff members, volunteers, and residents with respect and dignity, maintaining a positive attitude at all times.


    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
    • Detail-oriented and able to multi-task.
    • Ability to quickly learn and apply new information/skills.
    • Sensitivity to and understanding of The Salvation Army's comprehensive mission.
    • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
    • Self-motivated with the ability to work with minimal supervision.
    • Ability to work in a challenging environment and maintain poise under pressure.
    • Ability and willingness to keep information confidential.


    Physical Requirements:
    • Ability to sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, and twist on an intermittent or continuous basis.
    • Ability to operate telephone, desktop or laptop computer.
    • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs (emptying trash, moving boxes, etc.).
    • Ability to go up and down stairs with a load of laundry.
    • Ability to sweep, mop, and vacuum floors on a daily basis.
