ORGANIZATIONAL SUMMARY
For nearly half a century, Florida's coastline and marine life has been protected and monitored by the Florida Institute of Oceanography (FIO), providing a shared resource across the State University System (SUS). FIO was designated a state-wide Academic Infrastructure Support Organization (AISO) in 2009 by the Board of Governors of the (SUS). FIO is hosted by the University of South Florida and housed at the College of Marine Science located in St. Petersburg, Florida.
FIO has three major sea-going vessels, the R/V Hogarth, R/V Weatherbird II and R/V Western Flyer, along with the land-based Keys Marine Laboratory in Layton, FL, providing science and education capabilities. These platforms have supported over 10,000 undergraduate and graduate students statewide since 2009, allowing students to connect first-hand with scientific research conducted along Florida's coast. FIO operates under a Memorandum of Understanding with 32 institutions and agencies engaged in marine research, education, and resources management, including all 12 public universities, providing collaborative opportunities across academia, government, and private sector for educational, training, research, and public outreach opportunities for students and scientists across Florida.
POSITION SUMMARY
Serves as Assistant Engineer on both the R/V Weatherbird II and R/V Hogarth per scheduling and operational needs. Position ensures proper operation of all machinery. Performs routine/preventative maintenance and repair of engine room machinery, including but not limited to diesel engines, generators, electrical, hydraulic equipment, plumbing and compressed air system at sea or in port. Performs machinery overhauls, dismantles machinery and equipment, repairs, replacing components, performs subsequent reassembles, operational testing of controls, safeties, shutdowns, and place equipment in service. Services and repairs sanitation system (toilets, sinks, showers, potable water system) gray water system with proper waste management and disposal. Troubleshoots; diagnoses and recommends solutions for correcting problems with equipment and machinery as necessary. Carries out other ship maintenance as assigned. Possesses good working knowledge of damage control and shipboard safety. This position requires excellent communications skills to carry out instructions safely and efficiently to students and researchers; and physical abilities such as trunk strength, manual dexterity, and wrist-finger movement in order to perform the essential functions of the position.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Employment is contingent upon a successful background check and pre-employment screenings must meet university standards. FIO is a member of the APCA Drug Consortium, final candidates will also be subject to random screenings to be in compliant with 46 CFR and university policies/regulations.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Ensure proper operation of all machinery. Perform routine/preventative maintenance and repair of engine room machinery, including but not limited to diesel

disposal. Troubleshoot; diagnose and recommend solutions for correcting problems with equipment and machinery as necessary. Maintain inventories, engine room
logs and preventative maintenance schedules as required. Daily communications with Marine Captain on the status of engine room.
Assist scientific party. Load, unload, and secure all scientific gear before and after departure. Set up equipment, take on fuel, water, food, supplies and perform other duties as needed. Participate in all deployment and recovery of scientific equipment as needed using craning, winches, trawl, nets and other equipment as needed. Partake in watch keeping, assisting with bridgewatch, bridge standard and all deck/gear operations.
Perform duties for fire, man overboard and abandon ship drills and emergencies. Render CPR/First Aid as needed. Observe engine/fire room repairs and work being done at shipyard (cleaning, chipping, priming, painting and etc.) Perform other duties as assigned by the Marine Captain.
Position is a 40-hour per week position in port when not at sea on scientific and educational missions.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
MINIMUM
This position requires completion of an approved apprenticeship program in marine services technician repair; or a high school diploma and three years of appropriate experience. Appropriate vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience.
PREFERRED
Prefer a USCG Assistant Engineer or license. Experience with Cummings, Caterpillar and Detroit diesel engines and outboard engines; cutting and welding; experience with deploying standard oceanographic equipment or similar systems; experience operating various trawls and towing techniques on research vessels; small boat handling; basic navigation, wheel watch.
Experience working on research vessels in an academic environment.
