    About the Position: This position serves as a Non-Destructive Tester (Armament) for the U.S. Army JFK Special Warfare Center and School.

    Duties
    • Perform Nondestructive Testing and Inspection (NDTI) methods, procedures, and techniques regarding Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI) and weapon live-fire testing.
    • Perform the full range of work involved in the technical inspection, gauging, and repair of non-standard, foreign, and U.S. legacy small arms weapon systems.
    • Operate and adjust a variety of Non-Destructive Testing and Inspection (NDTI) associated equipment.
    • Inspect and test items such as castings, forgings, weldments, machined parts, modified parts, facility fabricated parts, and also on procured items including both raw material.
    • Develop and produce indoor range risk assessments for ammunition handling and indoor range live-fire operations.
    • Utilize a variety of test, measuring, and diagnostic equipment, which in many cases involves critical tolerances.
    Requirements

    Conditions of Employment
    • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance.
    • In accordance with Change 3 to AR 600-85, Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Program, employee must successfully pass a urinalysis screening prior to appointment and periodically thereafter.
    • The employee will be required to successfully pass physical examinations as required by Federal and Office of Safety and Occupational Health Administration guides as a pre-employment condition and annually.
    • This position requires frequent heavy lifting up to 50 pounds.
    • This position is covered by the 1998 Lautenberg Amendment to the Gun Control Act of U.S.C Persons convicted of misdemeanor domestic violence are not eligible for this position.
    • Incumbent must possess near vision Jaeger Number 1, at not less than 12 inches in at least one eye. Also, must be capable of distinguishing and differentiating colors used in the process involved.
    • Must be able to obtain and maintain certification by the American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT) within 24 months of employment: Level I Magnetic Particle (MT) test methods.
    • Incumbent must obtain Range Safety Officer Certified for U.S. Army forts, bases, and/or installations.

    Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Non-Destructive Tester (Armament) without more than normal supervision. I have the ability to perform common Nondestructive Testing and Inspection (NDTI) methods, procedures, and techniques regarding Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI), technical inspections, and weapon live-fire testing on non-standard, foreign, and U.S. legacy weapon systems and production items. I can conduct NDTI of castings, forgings, weldments, machined parts, modified parts, facility fabricated parts, also on procured items including both raw material and fully functional non-standard weapon, foreign, and U.S. legacy weapon system components, assemblies, and whole weapon systems. Determine the correct uses of a variety of test, measuring, and diagnostic equipment. Identify specimen discontinuities, both surface and near surface, and subsurface anomalies such as cracks, casting tears, inclusions, etc. I work under close supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

    • PHYSICAL EFFORT: The work involves prolonged periods of standing, walking, repeated bending and occasional climbing. Lifts subassemblies or small weapons weighing 15 to 20 pounds. Moderate lifting and carrying (approximately 40 pounds) of items is required. Often carries large assemblies or weapons weighing up to 50 pounds.
    • ???????WORKING CONDITIONS: Works in facility shops that are well lighted, heated, and ventilated. Stands on concrete floors or other hard surfaces for long periods. Incumbent is subject to radiation from x-ray machines, fumes during penetrant inspection, and soiled clothes from splashed solutions. Is frequently exposed to the possibility of minor cuts and bruises from tools or sharp edges of metal. Incumbent is also exposed to constant machine noise, loud noise (i.e. weapons firing), dust, solvents, grease, and oils. Works around machinery with moving parts and around moving objects or vehicles. Incumbent is required to wear rubber gloves during magnetic particle and liquid penetrant inspection. Work involves eyestrain during viewing of very small imperfections and examining indications of fractures. May work in areas that are drafty, hot, poorly lit, noisy and dirty. Wears safety equipment and protective clothing, gloves, and face shield (or other appropriate eye protection), etc. as issued by the employer.
