    Description

    The Middle School Social Worker at our unique alternative school is vital in providing comprehensive social and emotional support to middle school students. This position is dedicated to addressing the unique needs of students in our non-traditional educational setting, where students may face various challenges that impact their well-being and academic success. The Middle School Social Worker collaborates with students, families, teachers, and staff to create a supportive and inclusive learning environment.

    Key Responsibilities:

    Student Support
    • Provide individual and group counseling to students, addressing various emotional, social, and behavioral issues.
    • Conduct assessments to identify students' social and emotional needs and develop tailored intervention plans.
    • Facilitate workshops and programs on conflict resolution, anger management, and coping strategies.
    Family Engagement
    • Work closely with students' families to establish positive relationships and support their involvement in their child's education.
    • Conduct home visits and parent meetings to address concerns and develop strategies for family support.
    Crisis Intervention
    • Respond to crises and emergencies involving students, providing immediate support and coordinating appropriate resources.
    • Collaborate with school administration and community agencies to ensure the safety and well-being of students in crisis.
    Collaborative Approach
    • Collaborate with teachers and other school staff to implement strategies that promote a positive and inclusive school culture.
    • Attend and participate in multidisciplinary team meetings to discuss student progress and development.
    Educational Advocacy
    • Advocate for students' rights and access to educational services, particularly for those with exceptional needs or Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
    • Assist in the development and implementation of academic and behavioral support plans.
    Data and Documentation
    • Maintain accurate and confidential records of student interactions, assessments, and progress.
    • Generate reports to monitor the effectiveness of intervention strategies and recommend adjustments as necessary.
    Professional Development
    • Stay current on best practices in the field of social work.
    • Participate in ongoing professional development opportunities to enhance skills and knowledge.
    Qualifications:
    • Master's degree in social work from an accredited program.
    • State licensure or certification as a School Social Worker.
    • Experience working with middle school students in diverse and non-traditional educational settings is preferred.
    • Strong communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
    • Empathy and a genuine commitment to the well-being of students.
    • Knowledge of applicable laws, regulations, and ethical standards in school social work.

    CSDE Requirements:

    The Connecticut State Department of Education requirements to become certified as a school social worker in Connecticut include the following:
    • Hold a Master's degree in social work from a school of social work accredited by the Council on Social Work Education; and
    • Complete a course of study in special education comprised of not fewer than 36 clock hours, which shall include study in understanding the growth and development of exceptional children, including handicapped and gifted and talented children and children who may require special education; and methods for identifying, planning for, and working effectively with special-needs children in the regular classroom. This requirement does not apply to individuals who receive a MSW from an out-of-state school.
