    POSITION: School Health Services Nurse - Hamilton City Schools

    GENERAL DESCRIPTION: To provide care to students, ensure health records compliance, collaborate to develop individual health plans for students so that students can access the fullest possible educational opportunity using a student-centered, collaborative approach to learning and health to minimize absence due to illness and create an environment of health and well-being and academic success in schools by providing preventive services, early identification of problems, interventions, health education and referrals.

    QUALIFICATIONS:
    • Registered Nurse Professional Licensure issued by The Ohio Board of Nursing.
    • Associate's Degree required, Bachelor's Degree preferred.
    • Ohio Department of Education credential or willing to obtain prior to the first day.
    • Current BLS certification. PALS certification preferred.
    • At least one year of clinical experience as a licensed Registered Nurse. School health services or pediatric nursing experience preferred.
    • Maintains professional licensure through continuing education.
    • Computer proficiency including experience documenting using electronic health records and annual reporting of state mandated health screenings.
    • Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, community resources and the interdisciplinary teams while complying with federal and state confidentiality laws.
    • Ability to collaborate with others as part of an interdisciplinary team including contributions to Individualized Education Plans (IEP) and 504 plans.
    • History of good job attendance and performance evaluations.
    • Must pass a criminal background check and be free from communicable disease.
    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
    • Provides care to students and staff who need emergency care due to injury or who present with an acute illness.
    • Obtain necessary provider information and forms for medications and health procedures to be administered in schools.
    • Reviews and monitors immunization records for compliance to state laws and school policies.
    • Establishes and maintains a confidential school health record for each student.
    • Develops nursing care plans for students including the individualized healthcare plan (IHP) and the emergency action plan (EAP).
    • Collaborates with students/families, the school, and the school community through shared planning to provide and coordinate school health services and goal-oriented interventions outlined in the student's IHP to address the educational and health needs of students while enhancing caregiving capabilities of students and families to improve both health and learning.
    • Implements provider orders as outlined on the student's IHP to promote optimal level of functioning and reduce disability/complications of chronic disease, promote student disease self-management, and help students/families to access needed resources.
    • Implements student-centered interventions based on standard protocols and provider orders including routine treatments and medication administration.
    • Delegates/assigns the performance of specific nursing tasks, in a specific situation, for a particular student to a LPN or an UAP and provides the training and ongoing supervision of the LPN/UAP and evaluates the student's health outcome.
    • Coordinate care including training school staff as appropriate regarding health and EAPs related to diabetes, seizures, asthma, allergies and use of emergency medications i.e. Epi-Pen, Glucagon and Diastat.
    • Provides staff educational in-services i.e. CPR training, first aid, and other potential health emergencies according to needs in your school i.e. seizures and food allergies.
    • Address potential health problems that are barriers to learning or symptoms of underlying medical conditions by coordinating and assisting with mandated screenings i.e. vision, hearing and scoliosis.
    • Initiates referrals according to state and school policies, and follows up to determine the student's health needs received professional care and school adjustments recommended by the provider are understood by school staff.
    • Participates with a team of school/community professionals to ensure continuity of healthcare services both inside and outside the school setting.
    • Serves as a representative of the school community and communicates with community health providers and community health agencies and partnerships to promote the health of the community.
    • Educates and assists students with health needs, self-care and coping, and facilitates involvement of the student in the change process, empowering the student to identify concerns and solutions, and supports the student in realizing his/her own power, capabilities and autonomy in managing his/her health.
    • Provides health education information directly to individual students, groups of students or classes by providing guidance and consultation about health education curriculum.
    • Provides evidence-based, planned learning to students/families to provide knowledge, skills, attitudes and beliefs to support positive health behaviors including student self-care/self-management, student/family health literacy and student/family healthcare decision making.
    • Documents the events, actions, thoughts, daily activities and progress in meeting the goals and outcomes in a student's IHP as a legal record of care and to influence practice decisions, advocate for changes and influence policy.
    • Reports communicable diseases as required by law.
    OTHER DUTIES AND FUNCTIONS:
    • Assures that school district policies and procedures adhere to legal and regulatory statutes and ethical standards of nursing practice.
    • Assesses for factors that negatively affect health in the school environment and promote policies and practices that reduce environmental health risks and promote emotionally and physically healthy school communities.
    • Provides health awareness activities for staff and students/families and consults with other school staff regarding healthy lifestyles and staff wellness programs.
    • Delivers culturally and linguistically appropriate school health services that are respectful and responsive to the health beliefs, practices and needs of diverse populations.
    • Identifies health disparities and works to create an environment in which everyone has the opportunity to attain their full potential.
    • Uses current and emerging innovations to improve communication, collect/manage data (electronic health records), increase learning and address students' health needs.
    • Serves as a role model for students on how to conduct themselves as citizens and as responsible, intelligent human beings.
    • Helps instill in the students the belief in and practice of ethical principles and democratic values.
    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
    Knowledge of: Board policies and procedures, ORC Chapter 4723 Nurse Practice Act, OAC Chapters through , appropriate school law, requirements of the Ohio Department of Education; effective management procedure; required local, state and federal reports; public relations; district and community resources.

    Ability to: Interpret policies, rules and regulations; compile and prepare required reports; make appropriate operational recommendations; communicate effectively; build trust; lift a moderate amount of weight; transport self and materials to work site.

    Skill in: Practice according to NASN Code of Ethics, NASN core values, NASN and ANA Scope and Standards of Practice and Standards of Professional Performance.

    ADDITIONAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
    Frequent: Exposure to blood, bodily fluids and tissue, unruly children/adults, sick children, and loud noise.

    Periodic: Exposure to inclement weather driving conditions, traffic, and severe weather.

    TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
    Salary and work year as established by the Governing Board. The employee shall remain free of any alcohol or non - prescribed controlled substance use in the workplace throughout his/her employment in the District.

    EVALUATION:
    Performance of this position will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on Evaluation of Support Personnel.
