Purpose

Intermediate level position designing innovative technical devices supporting heavy-ion accelerator development and operation.

Assigned Scope

Support the Mechanical Engineering Design Group on design, production, assembly, and implementation.

The Mechanical Design Engineering I will execute work to meet Mechanical Engineering Department project milestones and performance objectives (cost, scope, and schedule).

Major Position Responsibilities

• Produce and document effective design solutions by developing system-level models and concepts and creating CAD designs/details [30%]
• Produce 2-D and 3-D drawings in order to support engineering design of technical equipment (includes the extensive use of GD&T) [20%]
• Perform calculations and analysis validating system designs [10%]
• Present design solutions to stakeholders and convene design reviews to obtain stakeholder feedback and endorsement [10%]
• Interact with project leader and subject matter experts to transform technical requirements into design solutions [10%]
• Provide support for fabrication, assembly, testing, and commissioning of technical equipment [10%]
• Assists with project leader and subject matter experts in reviewing design layouts, budgets, project documentation for construction, testing, modification of hardware and software and/or the installation of sub-systems [10%]

Qualifications

Required

• A bachelor degree in Engineering or Physics; three to five years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in fabrication techniques, cryogenic systems, electronics, mechanical and electronic drafting and computer systems; and may require experience in the use of CAD and/or related engineering systems, including file transfer; experience in the use of exotic metals, including knowledge of their properties, in the fabrication and assembly of sophisticated research equipment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience

Desired

• Mechanical Engineering degree with five years of experience
• Experience with system-level detailing and checking mechanical drawings for production
• Experience with SolidWorks and PDM Systems
• Experience in the design, fabrication and complex assembly of superconducting equipment
• Experience in fabrication techniques, cryogenic systems, installation and operations setup, electronics, mechanical and electronic drafting and computer systems
• Ability to work with export controlled materials

Work Direction and Interfaces

• Report to group leader or department manager.
• Interface with team members, project leaders, subject matter experts, and suppliers
