    Job Title

    The Certified Pharmacy Technician role supports pharmacists in various duties, including medication preparation, dispensing, and delivery to patients across all age groups.

    Based on experience and education, applicants will be assigned the appropriate job title.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Maintain daily communication with nursing departmental personnel, hospital staff, physicians, and other UPMC employees.
    • Travel between UPMC facilities to complete pharmacy tasks as needed.
    • Participate in performance improvement initiatives within the department.
    • Embody UPMC's mission, vision, and values.
    • Ensure the pharmacy remains clean, organized, and safe by restocking shelves, cleaning workstations, and managing medication stock.
    • Complete necessary documentation, including medication credits, charge forms, and logs, according to departmental procedures.
    • Assist in training new employees and pharmacy students on work procedures.
    • Fills and replaces medications in automated dispensing cabinets.
    • Demonstrate proficiency in using current equipment, such as pneumatic tubes, fax machines, printers, computers, and telephones.
    • Inspect medications in assigned areas, removing expired or recalled items and completing necessary documentation.
    • Fulfill interdepartmental orders and complete related documentation.
    • Respond promptly to phone calls, attend to customers, and check the pneumatic tube station regularly.
    • Understand and comply with controlled substance handling procedures.
    • Repurpose medications as needed and complete required documentation.
    • Prepare and label non-sterile compounds and other products, performing necessary calculations and completing documentation.
    • Once trained, prepare specialty products under pharmacist supervision, including chemotherapy and epidurals.
    • Prepare and label IV admixtures and sterile products, demonstrating aseptic technique and completing necessary calculations.
    • Label pre-made IV solutions and admixtures correctly.
    • Deliver medications to patient care units and transfer/remove medications as needed.
    • Verify order accuracy and ensure pharmacist review before dispensing.

    Requirements

    • High school diploma or equivalent.
    • Employment experience:
      • Certification by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is required, along with continuing education credits.

    Licenses, Certifications, and Clearances

    • Act 34 clearance is required.
