Performs intermediate protective service work processing inmates, maintaining jail security, transporting inmates to court, medical and related facilities. Prepares reports and maintains files and records. Performs related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Detention Sergeant.

Examples of Duties
Ensures the safety and security of inmates within the County jail, patrols jail area periodically to ensure security maintains order. Conducts head counts, resolves conflicts, performs cell searches, and removes dangerous and unruly inmates as necessary. Supervises inmates during meals, personal hygiene, and related activities for conformance to institutional rules, regulations, and procedures. Escorts and transports inmates to court and other required appointments. Delivers food to inmates, removes trays and food carts. Distributes medication to inmates as prescribed or directed. Contacts nurse in medical emergencies.
Receives and processes inmates into custody of institution. Searches prisoners. Takes charge of personal property. Provides opportunities for inmates to call attorney's and/or relatives. Advises inmates on institutional rules and regulations.
Operates electronic door system and control panel. Maintains key and radio control.
Records visits. Ensures the safety and security of visitors, inspects items brought into the jail, and checks incoming and outgoing mail. Receives, receipts, and accounts for funds deposited into inmate accounts. Prepares and maintains logs, reports, and records. Organizes files, answers telephone, contacts other agencies when needed, and responds to General public inquiries.

Supervision Received: Works under moderate supervision of the Detention Sergeant.

Position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Physical Activities, Visual Acuity, and Working Conditions for this Position.
Climbing- Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles, and the like using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized. This factor is important if the amount and kind of climbing required exceeds that required for ordinary locomotion

Minimum Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience:
High school diploma or GED or equivalent combination of education and experience.
License or Certification Requirements:
NC BLET and Detention Officer Certification or the ability to obtain within one (1) year of employment.
Valid NC Driver's License.
The Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program is intended to encourage individuals to enter and continue to work full-time in public service jobs. Medical, Dental, and Vision Insurance
For Full Time employees in a regular position, insurance is available and effective the first day of the following month after having worked for an entire month. The County currently pays 100% of the cost for regular employees working at least 30 hours per week. Dependent coverage is also available.
