Job Description
The Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Technologist for Centra Southside Community Hospital (CSCH) operates MRI scanners and provides quality diagnostic examinations.
In addition, this position performs computed tomographic examinations (CAT scans) and takes X-rays, as well as administers non-radioactive materials into patient's blood stream for diagnostic purposes.
This position monitors patient safety and comfort and views images of area being scanned to ensure image quality.This position is part of a Diagnostic Imaging department and works with a high volume of inpatient, outpatient, and Emergency Department (ED) patients.
Responsibilities
Produces quality MRI, x-ray, and CT exams
Operates Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scanners
Selects appropriate imaging techniques or coils to produce required images
Positions patients on cradle, attaching immobilization devices if needed, to ensure appropriate placement
Injects intravenously contrast dyes in accordance with scope of practice
Creates backup copies of images by transferring images from disk to storage media or workstation
Uses radiation safety measures and protection devices to comply with government regulations and to ensure safety of patients and staff
Reviews and evaluates x-rays and computer-generated information to determine if images are satisfactory
Positions imaging equipment and adjusts controls to set exposure time and distance, according to specification of examination
Calculates exposure factors utilizing posted exposure charts/preprogrammed units
Explains procedures and observes patients to ensure safety
Conducts screening interviews of patients to identify contra-indications, such as ferrous objects, pregnancy, prosthetic heart valves, cardiac pacemakers, or tattoos
Keys commands and data into computer to document and specify scan sequences
Positions and immobilizes patient on examining table
Records, processes, and maintains patient data or treatment records
Evaluates images on the Remote Operating Panel (ROP) unit or on the Picture Archiving Communication System (PACS) for technical quality
Completes image evaluation/annotation by using appropriate Right or Left identification markers on image, and by identifying position on films with annotation of lead markers
Maintains patient records by inputting patient examination information into the Radiology Information System (RIS) and documenting changes made to examination
Cleans work area and equipment, including MRI, x-ray, and/or CT machine
Qualifications
Required Education:
Completed a two (2)- year degree or certification program in Radiologic Technology
Preferred Experience:
At least one (1) year of experience as a Radiologic Technologist (RT). At least one (1) year of computed tomographic (CT) scan or Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) experience
Required Certifications and Licensures:
Certification as a Radiology Technologist by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification from American Heart Association or the American Red Cross.
Must test for Computed Tomograhy (CT) Certification by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) within eighteen (18) months of hire and successfully obtain CT Certification within thirty (30) months of hire.
Must test for and obtain Magnetic Resonance Imaging Certification by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) within eighteen (18) months of hire
