- Maintains clean and safe animal habitats and enclosures, including raking, sweeping, hosing, scrubbing, and disinfecting.
- Provides food and water to animals following established protocols and species-appropriate methods.
- Monitors animals and appropriately reports observations to animal care leadership and animal health staff as needed.
- Utilizes operant conditioning techniques to advance training, health, and wellbeing.
- Provides opportunities for animals to exhibit species-appropriate behavior through approved enrichment techniques and habitat furnishings
- Collaborates with behavior management and animal care leadership to develop enrichment strategies and training plans.
- Regularly conducts and documents animal wellbeing assessments.
- Maintains accurate written and digital documentation of animal care, behavior, observations, and treatments as needed.
- Obtains regular weights and other monitoring data as directed.
- Engages with guests both informally and through formal presentations.
- Assists the Animal Care Supervisor and Area Curator with developing husbandry practices.
- Assists the Animal Care Supervisor and Area Curator with designing and planning enclosure furnishings.
- Assists with hand rearing of animals as needed.
- Provides treatment to animals as directed by the Animal Care Supervisor, Area Curator, and Veterinarian.
- Conducts minor repairs and improvements to animal habitats and enclosures.
- Maintains a clean, orderly working environment.
- Maintains all equipment, tools, and supplies in good working order.
- Operates vehicles to transport supplies, equipment, and animals within the Zoo and between facilities.
- Participates in maintenance, operations, and education functions of the Zoo as necessary.
- Supports the Zoo's commitment to continued growth of diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and belonging for team members, volunteers, guests, and supporters.
- Assists with special projects and helps other team members as needed.
- Actively contributes to positive guest experiences.
- High school diploma or GED is required.
- Valid driver's license is required.
- Bachelor's degree in an animal-related field is preferred.
- One year of experience in a zoological setting is preferred.
- Knowledge of animal care, handling, and natural history for the species under direct care.
- Knowledge of animal wellbeing concepts and ability to apply knowledge to assess the wellbeing of individuals or groups of animals.
- Ability to identify native trees and shrubs when providing browse to animals.
- Ability to endure high-stress situations when feeding, transferring, or restraining animals.
- Ability to adapt to a rapidly changing, dynamic work environment.
- Ability to professionally and effectively communicate with others through written correspondence.

Applications are being accepted for a full-time Animal Care Specialist to join the Fort Wayne Zoo team.
This position is responsible for the daily husbandry of hoofstock, small mammals, and birds in the Indiana Family Farm area.
This is a full-time position requiring availability for a 40-hour work week year-round. The Animal Care Specialist provides quality daily animal care for Zoo animals, ensures appropriate animal wellbeing, and performs husbandry practices such as operant conditioning, enrichment strategy, and assisting with husbandry and enclosure furnishing design. This position works with a wide variety of species in a designated area of the Zoo. This position also strives to embody the Zoo's values at all times, contributes to positive guest experiences, and performs other duties as required.
