    Job Description

    The Glenn Heights Fire Department is seeking motivated individuals for an exciting career serving the citizens of Glenn Heights as a Paramedic.

    Typical Duties

    Job Summary:
    Responsible for responding to emergency medical calls and all other types of emergency calls to protect life and property.

    Essential Job Duties/Responsibilities:
    Essential duties and functions may include the following. Must possess required knowledge skills, abilities and experience and to be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations that the essential functions of the job can be performed. Other related duties may be assigned.

    1. Responds to all types of accidents, gas leaks, flooded structures, hazardous substances; performs lifesaving and rescue work; and performs rescue services.
    2. Have and maintain good knowledge of modern principles, practices and procedures of Fire/EMS department work.
    3. Operates an emergency vehicle safely; treat and transports patients in accordance with the Glenn Heights Emergency Medical Services protocols and Glenn Heights Fire Department policies.
    4. Prepares and maintains a variety of records and reports such as controlled drug inventory, equipment and station logs, and EMS reports; operates pneumatic and auxiliary equipment.
    5. Work alongside and in collaboration with Firefighter/Paramedics
    6. Washes, polishes, and performs preventive maintenance on apparatus and equipment; cleans and maintains fire station and grounds; updates station bulletin boards and maps as requested.
    7. Presents programs and participates in the department's public relations programs as assigned.
    8. Participates in physical fitness training per departmental policy.
    9. Attend scheduled training necessary to maintain EMS certification and all other required certifications.
    10. Maintain the Glenn Heights Fire Department standard of professionalism and judgement when dealing with the public.
    Education & Experience

    Minimum Qualifications:
    • High School diploma or GED equivalent
    • National Registry (NREMT) Certified Paramedic or Texas Department of State Health Services (TDSHS) Paramedic Certification
    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
    • Comprehensive abilities in problem solving, conflict management and customer relations techniques
    • Proficient skills in Microsoft Office Suite including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
    • Ability to develop and maintain a positive working relationship with staff, fellow employees, elected officials, supervisors, citizens, business and community groups
    • Ability to maintain confidentiality when working with sensitive information and to comply with all record retention laws
    • Proficient skills to communicate clearly and concisely in English, both orally and in writing
    • Ability to maintain proficiency and knowledge of current and upcoming or new regulations/legislation within areas of responsibility
    • Proficient understanding of all City safety rules and operating procedures
    • Work as a member of a fire and paramedic team using modern techniques; EMS procedures; emergency incident management, specifically the Incident Command System (ICS); appropriate gear, tools and agents
    • Proficient skills to provide medical care according to department policies and medical protocols and to perform frequent lifting and moving of patients
    • Ability to have/maintain a clean criminal record excluding minor traffic violations
    • Ability to maintain mental and physical fitness and demonstrate 20/40 uncorrected vision, correctable to 20/20
    • Ability to discern traffic signs and house numbers from approximately 50 feet, often in dim light and distinguish between the colors of red, yellow and green.

    • The incumbent performs work in both an indoor and outdoor environment with exposure to hazardous and unpleasant conditions in extreme temperatures including heat, cold, temperature swings and inclement weather; some exposure to dust, odor, electrical, mechanical, and toxic hazards.
    • Work requires stooping and climbing, lifting 100 pounds, standing, walking, sitting, twisting, pulling, pushing and occasional working in tight or confined areas.
    • Ability to work overtime and/or be on-call for the department during extreme weather and/or the rotation of schedule on nights/weekends; ability to work a 24-48-hour work schedule, possibly required to be mandatory to fulfill minimum staffing on following shift.
    • Operates an emergency vehicle during both the day and night, in emergency situations involving speeds more than posted limits in congested traffic and in unsafe road conditions caused by factors such as fog, smoke, rain, ice and snow.
