    JOB SUMMARY
    :

    Under general supervision,design and maintain the City of Arlington's copper and fiber cablinginfrastructure. Ensures that cabling infrastructure is maintained usingindustry standards and best practices. Responsible for daily operations andemergency repairs of cabling infrastructure, including designs for fiber routepaths supporting existing and new infrastructure. Coordinate with the city'spartner cabling vendors on all new installs, modifications, and repairs.


    ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

    • Designing and implementing new copper and fiber optic cabling infrastructure for both inside and outside plant.
    • Responsible for maintaining the availability of the existing cabling infrastructure on a 24/7 operational requirement.
    • Read, review, interpret, and update blueprints and facilities documentation to prepare for and install required cabling.
    Such records may include, but are not limited to:

    o Maps.
    o Fiber splice diagrams.
    o Structured cabling as-built drawings.
    o Testing documents.

    • Provides oversight and performs quality control of external contractors' workmanship.
    • Develop detailed cost estimates based on design requirements.

    OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:

    • Test and troubleshoot all copper and fiber optic cabling infrastructure with a cable tester, Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) tester, optical power meter, and fiber identifier.
    • Perform cable terminations for various cable media types (Cat5e, Cat6, fiber optic cable, coaxial cable). Install cabling and various cable supports such as cable trays, conduits, and hangers.
    • Support the build-out of Main Distribution Frames (MDF) and Intermediate Distribution Frames (IDF), such as racks, patch panels, and wire management.
    • Perform routine preventive maintenance on aerial and underground fiber optic lines.
    • Perform live fiber cutovers during maintenance hours.
    • Maintain an ongoing accurate hardware supply and asset inventory.
    • Perform quarterly failover testing of the City's backbone fiber optic network.
    • Keep track of vendor invoices and completed ticket requests.
    • Document damaged cabling infrastructure and coordinate with Risk Management or third-party vendors in effort to recoup costs.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

    • Able to understand the requirement for aerial, underground fiber optic cable.
    • Knowledge of the proper use and maintenance of fiber fusion splicers, OTDRs, low voltage power meters.
    • Knowledge of copper and fiber optic cabling industry standards and best practices.
    • Ability to work independently or in a team environment & communicate professionally with co-workers and customers.
    • Ability to climb ladders and operate a bucket truck.
    • Ability to lift and move equipment up to 100lbs.
    • Willingness to operate within a schedule that is subject to inclement weather conditions.
    • Able to participate in on-call rotation schedule for emergency repair.
    • Ability to work daytime and/or nighttime hours per customer schedule.
    • Ability to work in outdoor utility construction sites and safely work from heights or in underground manhole systems.
    • Ability to be organized with strong attention to detail.
    • Ability to have strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
    • Ability to walk and stand for long periods of time.
    • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, adjusting quickly to changing needs due to operational priorities.
    • Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions.

    Qualifying Education and Experience:

    • High School Diploma/GED
    • Minimum of 4 years of experience with the installation, and maintenance of cabling systems associated with: Telecommunications Systems (Copper, Fiber), Networks, Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) Security, Access Control and Wireless Solution.
    • Or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
    • Must possess a valid Texas driver license.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    Preferred Education and Experience:
    The following certifications with related experience will be considered:

    • CFOS/O - Certified Fiber Optic Specialist, Outside Plant
    • CFOS/S - Certified Fiber Optic Specialist, Splicing
    • CFOS/C - Certified Fiber Optic Specialist, Connectors
    • BICSI Installer or Designer Certification
