- Design, simulate, and fabricate mechanical structures in support of new sensor technologies and implementations related to sensor deployment, transduction, and orientation
- Develop manufacturing design and material solutions for initial prototype systems based on trade studies and engineering analysis that accounts for mechanical interoperability, performance, and survivability
- Demonstrate technical leadership within small, multi-disciplinary teams that may span hardware, software, and test & evaluation
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Top-Secret security clearance, for which U.S
- MS or BS degree with background in mechanical engineering or related fields
- Demonstrated relevant experience in component, subsystem, and/or system design meeting requirements (3+ years for MS, 5+ years for BS)
- Breath of experience with designing solutions to survive harsh environments such as undersea or outer space
- Ability to apply novel, innovative, and interdisciplinary approaches to challenging engineering problems
- Experience in simulation and experiment design, data collection, and interpretation
- Interest and demonstrated aptitude for working on large, complex technical projects and teams
- Ability to interact with technical and non-technical customers and external teammates to understand their technical issues, frame potential solutions, and develop collaborative projects

About the Team The Sensors Division at STR focuses on applied research and advanced technology development on innovative sensor system technology, from underwater acoustics and active/passive EO/IR to radar and electronic warfareOur work spans the modeling, development, integration, and test and evaluation required to prove the capability at each step
The Advanced Systems Development (ASD) Group within the Sensors Division supports the DoD and IC
ASD executes a broad portfolio of undersea and overhead technologies focused on advancing sensing capabilities in contested areas
The team develops signature exploitations, implements advanced algorithms and processing, creates novel sensing approaches spanning acoustic, RF, and optical domains, advances UUV designs and subsystem technologies, and fields prototype hardware to demonstrate impactful applications
The Role:
STR is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to support ongoing programs requiring the design and fabrication of sensor components, subsystems, and systems
These efforts will advance UUV system and payload capabilities, sensor array design and development, and sensor transducer designs
In this role you will be part of a team focused on the design, analysis, testing, and implementations of complex underwater systems in support of customers seeking innovative solutions to complex and challenging national security problems
You will collaborate with fellow researchers and engineers on multi-disciplinary teams within STR to develop, build, test, and demonstrate novel systems
The preferred location for this position is Arlington, VA
