    Responsible for leading activities associated with policy and government relations for the Academy. Reports to the Executive Director.

    About the Academy: The Academy for Radiology & Biomedical Imaging Research is a small, 501(c)(6) professional society representing the research focused needs of radiologists and imaging scientists. This is a small organizational culture. There is a collaborative and contributory culture where all team members have opportunities to contribute to efforts across the organization. The office is a hybrid environment with in-office expectations of 3 days per week. The office is located directly above the Farragut North (Red Line) metro station. Travel is expected to be 1-2 times per year. Salary commensurate with experience.

    Summary of Responsibilities:

  • Provides advice and counsel to the Executive Director (ED), Executive Committee, and Board of Directors on the development and implementation of Academy policy and government relations goals, strategic objectives and new initiatives, and other related activities.
  • Advise Executive Director and Board of Directors on policy and advocacy strategy, needs, and organizational opportunities.
  • Provides leadership for advocacy and policy programs, advocacy communications, and advocacy goals.
  • Responsible for developing and executing strategic initiatives to advance organizational goals related to advocacy and engaging early career investigators.
  • Develops and maintains effective liaison with government officials and counterparts in other organizations and coalitions.
  • Provides advice and guidance on other issues as needed by ED.
  • Essential duties:

  • Identifies emerging policy issues in line with the Academy mission and oversees the development of positions through interaction with staff, Board, and other relevant stakeholders.
  • Manages government relations and policy communication with Congress, government officials, and other external stakeholders.
  • Manage activities of outside lobbyists.
  • Develops and executes in-person advocacy events including annual Academy Hill Day, and collaborates with Director of Programs for the annual Medical Technology Imaging Showcase.
  • Support Academy-wide efforts at conferences and meetings including annual Radiological Society of North America and Association of Academic Radiology (nee Association of University Radiologists) annual meetings.
  • Develops and maintains relationships with Coalition for Imaging and Bioengineering Research (CIBR) stakeholders, provides input to CIBR related activities and initiatives.
  • Propose and implement initiatives to advance needs of research members as it relates to federal agencies (in particular, Council of Early Career Investigators in Imaging and Distinguished Investigators), including establishing relationships with patient advocacy groups to leverage increased advocacy voices.
  • Monitors proposed and enacted legislation including committee proceedings and hearings relevant to Academy advocacy issues. Attend relevant executive branch meetings.
  • Establishes and maintains relationships with Members of Congress and staff, congressional committees, and key federal agencies to ensure goals and objectives are heard.
  • Maintains, identifies new, and develops Congressional "champions" to advance the visibility and understanding of imaging research.
  • Establishes and/or manages relationships with coalitions and other organizations to advance Academy's policy agenda.
  • Works with leadership to assure members receive support and services requested; convenes and facilitates interested parties where appropriate and applicable.
  • Works with Communications Specialist to publicize government relations and policy activities.
  • Promotes active participation by members in grassroots advocacy efforts, including advocacy training initiatives.
  • Required Skills and Experience:

  • 4-year degree in political science, government, or related discipline. Advanced degree a plus.
  • At least 7 years of experience in government relations and policy, preferably in biomedical research or science advocacy. Prior experience on Capitol Hill a plus.
  • Ability to think strategically and creatively, adjust to changing circumstances, organize time, remain attentive to details, and identify resources for projects. Flexibility to deal with ambiguity while driving the work forward.
  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships among individuals and organizations with a range of interests and perspectives. S/he will bring strong emotional intelligence to the position.
  • Experience in scientific societies preferred.
  • Strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills; good meeting planning and facilitation skills.
  • MS Office Suite proficient (i.e., Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel, Word). Familiarity with SharePoint preferred.
