- Product Development
- Analyze and interpret sensory data, including generating statistical results and graphs for completed sensory data
- Promotes high product quality sensorial achievements within a professional work environment
- Special analysis request and projects per Sensory Manager or other Senior leaders Assist in the development of, or revisions to, SOP's and testing methods
- Conduct and assist in consumer testing - utilizing Sensory methods, Sensory tools, like Compusense, and statistical evaluation to report results that help to guide R&D projects
- Coordinate between Sensory teams the validation and smooth transition of products from R&D to Production- including creating profiles and a training program to improve transition to the Breweries
- Must have excellent communication skills including ability to write concise, informative reports and verbally present complex technical information to technical and non-technical audiences
- Collaborate with other sensory professionals, developers, and brewers
- Ability to listen and identify project objective and influence research plan
- Panel Building and Sensory QA
- Assure highest sensory quality of our product
- Panel assessment, track panelist performance and attendance, and provide performance feedback, screen new panelists and employees for taste and odor acuity, Prepare screeners, consent forms, instructional sheets and scoresheets, Maintain panelist database by adding new panelists
- Recruitment of internal and external panelists. Recruit, schedule, train and validate new panelists at both Boston Brewery and Design Center
- Conduct regular events and tests to refresh current panelists on profiles and introduce new products
- Develop focused Sensory panels - including Hop Profiling, IPA , Tea aging, Cider profiling
- Descriptive Panels, and more as needed
- Conduct the assessment and validation products created at the Boston Brewery, including mix blend, nano and 10 bbl samples
- Making presentations on sensory evaluation to professional organizations and/or continuing education programs/seminars
- Staying current with literature and information about sensory evaluation
- There is frequent exposure production environments:
- Subject to loud and constant noise
- Non-environmentally conditioned spaces which may lead to extreme hot and cold
- Operating environment is complex and densely populated with production equipment and forklifts that necessitates high situational awareness
- Bachelors Degree in Food Science or related field
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in sensory analysis
- Proficiency in statistical analysis (xlstat a plus) and report writing skills
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
- Proven success multi-tasking in a fast paced environment
- Travel up to 10%
- Master's Degree in Food Science or related field
- Experience in panel management strongly preferred
- Experience with consumer testing strongly preferred
- Experience working in a production environment
- Brewing or alcohol industry
- All production roles are required to pass a pre-employment physical exam to comply with their
specific role requirement(s) - Ability to lift up to 50lbs, sometimes repeatedly
- Regular walking and standing for long periods of time on concrete, metal and grated surfaces
- Responsibilities may require crouching, stepping over, crawling under, bending, twisting, climbing and reaching above head and shoulders repeatedly throughout the day
- Responsibilities may require climbing flights of stairs, working from heights or on elevated platforms
- Ability to wear assigned PPE (safety shoes, gloves, facemask, hearing protection and hard hat)
- Established dexterity so you can handle materials, operate equipment and interface with computer systems with precision
- Some roles (e.g., forklift operator) may be required to sit for a prolonged period of time and have strong peripheral vision and depth perception

We are currently hiring a R&D Sensory Scientist I in Boston, MA.
*A Hybrid position at Boston Beer requires that our coworkers reside within commuting distance to be onsite according to their teams' weekly schedule.
The Sensory Scientist will coordinate and execute all sensory panel functions at the Boston locations primarily focused on R&D Sensory panel support. This person will help to identify trends in beer and mixed-beverages, guide new Product Development with organoleptic insights, and build added strength to reporting consumer data. Scientific focus, prioritization and project management skills are essential.

In accordance with pay transparency lawsthe salary range for this role if hired is $51,000 - $104,000 annually based on location and the experience level of the candidate. In addition to base salary, this position is eligible for an annual discretionary bonus based on individual and company performance. Certain sales positions are also eligible for car allowance.
