    General Summary of Position:

The Greater Boston Portuguese-American Digital Archives (PADA) is an initiative of the Saab Center in collaboration with the University of Massachusetts Lowell Library System. Among the major goals of PADA is to establish a highly visible, public, and user-friendly repository of cultural heritage materials related to Portuguese Americans in the Greater Boston Area. To achieve this and other related goals, the PADA Archivist will be part of an academic interdisciplinary team at UMass Lowell that will create a sustainable, open-sourced, and inviting digital archive for disseminating and learning about, as well as celebrating, the history and heritage of Portuguese-Americans in New England.

    Essential Job Duties:

    1. Appraisal, selection, accessioning, & description of PADA materials: These tasks will be undertaken in concert with the interdisciplinary PADA project team:

  • Appraising records for their evidential, historical, and cultural value
  • Selecting materials for PADA that are relevant, balanced, and representative in serving as the collective memory of the region's Portuguese American communities
  • Accessioning, processing, and describing archival collections in accordance with the Society of American Archivist's "Describing Archives: A Content Standard," (DACS), 2nd Edition, 2013.
  • Ensuring all project-related activities are conducted on time and to the highest standard
  • Preparing quarterly status reports, in collaboration with the PADA project team, to document the progress of the archival processing and digitizing work
  • Collaborating with the PADA team and with community advisory groups in selecting, documenting, and collecting archival resources
  • 2. Establish sustainable, secure, and discoverable digital infrastructure for PADA:

  • Determining, in concert with the PADA team, digitization priorities for the collection including time sensitive community needs
  • Following existing processes and protocols for digitization, metadata tagging, storage, and other elements of digital archiving while actively updating policies as necessary
  • Overseeing the digitization of archival materials
  • Ensuring that the PADA collection is discoverable and optimized thru multiple access points
  • Performing technology monitoring for digital archives related tools, systems, and practice
  • 3. Ensure that intellectual property rights are observed:

  • Evaluating new collections for intellectual property rights and ensuring compliance with existing laws
  • Following takedown notice procedure for existing collections and re-evaluating collections as needed
  • 4. Collaborate on outreach initiatives and promote the University's commitment to community engagement:

  • Building and sustaining effective partnerships with community organizations and individuals
  • Where relevant, identifying potential collaborators
  • Ensuring optimum service to all internal and external partners in response to all requests for service and information
  • Maintaining an environment that is welcoming to persons of all backgrounds, nationalities, and roles
  • Assisting in the preparation, mounting, and publicizing exhibits and other media related to the development and significant features of PADA
  • A large part of this role is dependent on working within the community. The ability to travel between destinations within the Greater Boston area will be required. This role may involve periodic work on evenings and/or weekends.

This is a hybrid on campus/remote role. A large part of the work will be conducted in Cambridge and Peabody. There will be flexibility in work location based on local travel. However, the PADA Archivist will be expected to be on-site at UMass Lowell frequently, including for regular team meetings and to perform digitization work. A general estimation of the time split is 40% remote, 30% on campus, and 30% local travel.
