The ARC (Animal Recovery Center) and CARE (Canine Annex for Recovery and Enrichment) facilities are dedicated to the recovery and rehabilitation of victims of cruelty and neglect admitted through NYPD and the ASPCA's Humane Law Enforcement (HLE) and Community Engagement (CE) programs.
Our dedicated team of more than 45 sheltering, medical, and animal behavior professionals work closely with the ASPCA Animal Hospital, Forensics, Legal Advocacy and Investigations, Behavioral Sciences, Shelter Medicine Services, Community Engagement, Placement, and the Adoption Center teams to ensure coordinated response and operations, and holistic, balanced, high-quality care for the animals we serve.
The Veterinarian will perform all the duties of a licensed veterinarian, including providing compassionate, high-quality, practical veterinary care to a wide range of cruelty, neglect, and at-risk animals.
Responsibilities:
Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
Managing Medical Cases (80%):
Provide high-quality, practical veterinary care to a wide range of cruelty, neglect, and at-risk patients.
Perform medical intakes on all new NYPD and CE cases admitted to AAH/ARC/CARE and in collaboration with partner departments for animals admitted to veterinary partner hospitals and the Adoption Center.
Perform exams, diagnostic tests, and medical treatments with full utilization of Fear Free medical handling.
Provide high quality individualized care while maintaining overall population medicine using shelter best practices.
Provide medical care for outpatients of owned, fostered out and/or animals in transition to the Adoption Center.
Maintain thorough, high quality medical records, documenting all exam findings, test results, and treatments.
Ensure LVTs and daily care teams are practicing Fear Free handing.
Work with partner hospitals as needed, including referral for advanced care, and assessing medical stability of new cases at partner hospitals
Guide rotating veterinary interns and fellows through diagnosis and treatment plans for individual patients, as well as provide medical context for departmental protocols.
Ensure effective use of quarantine and isolation spaces to manage herd health; ensure appropriate use of PPE, dog walk orders, and cleaning orders.
Ability to assess medical prognosis and make appropriate euthanasia decisions following ARC/CARE/AAH protocols and guidelines outlined by the ARC Medical Supervisor and AAH Medical Director.
Keep the Director of Veterinary Services and ARC and CARE Medical Supervisors apprised of patient medical progress and flow of cases.
Collaborate and support the work of partner departments, particularly the Humane Law Enforcement, Community Engagement, and the Adoption Center departments.
Provide a high level of customer service to external and internal clients.Attend daily rounds;
ensure individual patients and the population are assessed daily and
treatment/intervention
recommendations are implemented in a timely fashion considering medical, behavior, and sheltering perspectives.
With the ARC and CARE Management team, contribute to a culture of learning at ARC and CARE, including ensuring a respectful and welcoming environment, active participation in goal setting and monitoring, clear expectations, and regular practice of feedback and after-actions.
Model a standard of continual commitment to improvement in all aspects of ARC and CARE's care and handling of dogs and cats.
Follow written and verbally communicated ASPCA and ARC Standard Operating Procedures.
Attend staff meetings, doctor meetings and other requested meetings.
Cover the ARC/CARE Medical Supervisors in their absence.
Assist the VP, Director of Veterinary Services, and Medical Supervisors with special projects, presentations and data collection as requested.

Qualification Requirements:
Ability to successfully work in a high-volume, fast-paced environment that combines emergency and shelter medicine and effectively multi-task with a high degree of integrity and accountability and without loss of attention to detail.
Must be able to handle multiple tasks at once and deal with high levels of stress in an environment of constantly changing priorities.
Ability to work well within a team and communicate effectively and courteously with all levels of staff.
Maintain open mind regarding changes and be willing to learn, implement, and teach new protocols
Provide medical support for larger scale NYPD and CE cases.
Maintain strict confidentiality when dealing with criminal cases.
The ability to work closely with behaviorally and medically compromised animals and feel comfortable working in an environment where humane euthanasia is performed on a regular basis.
Deploy locally or nationally at least one time per year.
May be required to work or provide medical support for disasters/weather coverage.
Willing to accept rotating on call responsibility.
Additional Information:
This is a full-time exempt position that works out of our 91st and 92nd Street office, but the incumbent must be flexible, as some early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays will be required.
Compensation and Benefits:
Starting pay for the successful applicant will depend on a variety of factors, including but not limited to education, training, experience, location, business needs, internal equity, market demands or budgeted amount for the role.
