This position is located in the Stanly County Bridge Maintenance Unit. Work includes, but is not limited to the maintenance, repair, and construction of State-owned bridges, culverts, and pipes. This position is technical in nature and labor intensive. Employee will be required to work in diverse working environments in all types of weather conditions.
Employee will work in and around heavy traffic, near heavy equipment, with hand and power tools and various other pieces of equipment.
Employee must be able to work in a close team environment or independently, as needed. Employee will be exposed to briars, poisonous plants, spiders, and snakes when working around or under bridges. When traffic volumes dictate, employee may be required to work at night or on weekends.Employee must be able to supervise and train others, be able to direct the daily activities of a work crew and may serve as a crew leader in the absence of other Supervisors or crew leaders.
Work includes a variety of functions including equipment operation, pile driving, carpentry, concrete work, machine operation, contract inspect, repair of culverts, bridges, large pipe bulkheads and pile clusters, sandblasting/painting, demolition work, welding, structure inspect, trenching/shoring, lead paint removal, steel fabrication and steel beam repair, installation, and maintenance of erosion control.
Must be willing to attend training and continuing education classes to keep up to date on all state/federal regulations and maintain certifications in all required areas (ie:traffic control and environmental stewardship). Work involves walking and standing for long periods of time in and around steep and uneven terrain. This position responds to emergencies such as snow and ice removal, downed trees, etc. during normal business hours or during emergency call back situations and scheduled night work. May require work during nontraditional work hours including nights, weekends, and holidays. This position is also subject to out-of-town travel during adverse weather or other extreme circumstances.

Employee in this position must have working knowledge of the principals involved in the operation and use of the equipment to which assigned.

Either possession of a current Commercial Driver's License on the date of hire OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver's License must be maintained through completion of on- the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49CFR383) within 360 days of hire.
Pre-employment drug testing is required.As a condition of employment, release forms (ALCDRG-01 and ALDCRG-06) must be signed allowing NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing.
