Job Title: Circulating Nurse

Description:

The circulating nurse is a vital member of the surgical team, responsible for coordinating patient care during procedures. This role ensures patient safety and comfort while maintaining a sterile environment in the operating room.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Patient Preparation:
• Verify patient identity, surgical site, and procedure to ensure accuracy.
• Educate patients and families about the surgical process, addressing any questions or concerns.
• Maintain patient safety and comfort before and after surgery.
2. Operating Room Setup:
• Prepare and organize the operating room with sterile instruments, equipment, and supplies.
• Verify the functionality of surgical equipment and devices to prevent malfunctions.
• Ensure aseptic technique throughout the procedure to minimize infection risk.
3. Assistance During Surgery:
• Pass instruments, sutures, and other supplies as needed to support the surgical team.
• Conduct an accurate count of surgical instruments and supplies to prevent foreign body retention.
• Monitor patient vital signs and response to anesthesia to ensure safe care.
• Document all aspects of the procedure, including surgeon instructions and any complications that arise.
4. Patient Advocacy:
• Advocate for patient needs and safety during surgery, prioritizing their well-being.
• Ensure the surgical team adheres to proper infection control protocols to minimize risks.
• Address any concerns or issues that emerge during the procedure, escalating if necessary.
5. Communication:
• Foster clear communication among the surgical team, including surgeons, anesthesiologists, and scrub nurses.
• Relay essential information about the patient's condition to recovery room staff.
6. Post-Operative Care:
• Support transferring the patient to the recovery room, ensuring a smooth transition.
• Provide post-operative care instructions to the patient and family, addressing any concerns.
• Hand over care responsibilities to the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU) or recovery room nursing staff.

Qualifications:

• Current and valid registered nurse (RN) license.
• BLS (Basic Life Support) and ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certification.
• Previous experience in perioperative nursing preferred.
• In-depth knowledge of surgical procedures, aseptic technique, and infection control.
• Exceptional communication and teamwork skills.
• Attention to detail and ability to thrive in fast-paced, high-stress environments.
