    Dermatology Technician Roles and Responsibilities

    The Dermatology Technician provides supportive patient care functions for the Dermatology department, under the supervision of a Physician, Registered Nurse, or Licensed Vocational Nurse. This includes ensuring the safety and comfort of patients and families according to legal, organizational, and professional standards.

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Demonstrating knowledge and scribing of medical terminology to assist in documentation during Dermatology office visits and/or procedures.
    • Assisting with procedures, sterile field, and/or cosmetic procedures, removal of sutures, Ipledge/isotretinoin patient education, registration in ipledge, apply patch testing for allergic contact dermatitis, sterilize instruments, and manage pathology log to ensure all results are received and given to patients/treatments done.
    • Administering injectables and performing phototherapy treatment/excimer laser treatment.

    Career Advancement Opportunities:

    The Dermatology Technician can advance to more senior roles by gaining experience, developing new skills, and taking on additional responsibilities. Senior technicians may be responsible for leading teams, mentoring junior staff, and contributing to the development of policies and procedures.

    Education and Training:

    To become a Dermatology Technician, one typically needs to complete a medical assistant program from an accredited institution. Additional training and certifications may be required for senior roles.

    Licensure and Certification:

    Dermatology Technicians may require certification or registration as a Medical Assistant, depending on their level of experience and the specific requirements of their employer.

    Skills and Qualifications:

    To succeed as a Dermatology Technician, one should have strong communication and interpersonal skills, be able to work effectively in a team environment, and have basic computer skills. Experience with electronic health records systems (EHRs) is also beneficial.
