Job Summary

The Bellevue Department of Transportation is seeking to fill one Intelligent Transportation Systems Engineer Intern position. This position is within the Smart Mobility group which manages the city's Intelligent Transportation System (ITS). This system includes a fully adaptive traffic signal system, traffic camera system, and other traffic operations tools.

These internships are an excellent opportunity for undergraduate students to gain on the job experience through working with a team of engineers on conceptual designs, data analysis, traffic operations, and other elements of transportation projects. It also offers students the opportunity to take on more in-depth and independent projects as they gain engineering experience.

****THIS POSITION REQUIRES STUDENTS TO BE ABLE TO WORK PART-TIME DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR AT BELLEVUE CITY HALL.***

Salary: Starting at$21.42/hr
Hours: Students would be expected to work full-time (40 hours per week) during the summer and part-time (8 to 20 hours per week) during the school year. Part-time hours flexible to student's class schedule.
Location: Hybrid. This position will primarily work in person at Bellevue City Hall with potential opportunities for remote work.
Start Time: June or July 2024
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The following list include potential tasks and responsibilities for these positions.
Engineering Support: Provide engineering and technical support to engineering staff.

Project Engineering:Assist engineers in developing traffic engineering project plans, specifications, and estimates. Become familiar with design standards and the MUTCD. Prepare detailed drawings using AutoCAD design software.
Engineering Studies: Assist engineers with engineering studies. Examples of studies include signal installation, crosswalk installation, street lighting, and traffic collision reduction.

Citizen Requests: Support engineering staff in reviewing and responding to concerns of Bellevue residents.

Signal Operations: Assist engineers with signal timing and the operation of an adaptive signal system (SCATS). Learn to create signal models and conduct analysis using Synchro modeling software.

Traffic Data:Perform and manage data collection using cameras, traffic counts, field visits, and SCATS software. Analyze and summarize data and prepare reports.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

Currently enrolled as a Civil Engineering or Pre-Engineering undergraduate student
Valid Driver's License and acceptable driving record
Ability to work at Bellevue City Hall full-time during the summer and part-time during the school year

Desired Qualifications:

Prefer current Freshman or Sophomore (Graduation date June 2025 or later), Juniors also encouraged to apply
Strong interest in transportation
Knowledge of or desire to learn AutoCAD and Excel

Supplemental Information

Student Intern: Are partially benefited employees and defined as variable, part-time, or seasonal employee enrolled in a bona fide education program. Full-time employees taking evening classes, those enrolled in one course, or those going to school periodically are not considered student interns. During the school year, the student intern must be scheduled to work 20 hours or less per week. During special situations (e.g., specific internship programs through school) or during school breaks, student interns can be scheduled to work more than 20 hours per week.

Partially Benefited Position: All positions that are not fully benefited. Partially benefited positions include variable, seasonal, or part-time positions. Partially benefited positions are at-will positions for which the employee is only eligible to receive either PERS benefits or MEBT II benefits, and no other benefits except as required by law.
