    All employees of Gulf Coast State College are expected to perform duties as assigned by Gulf Coast State College supervisory/management personnel, regardless of job title or routine job duties.

    The primary functions of this position are


    • Must be knowledgeable of the adult learning theory and its application.
    • Responsible as faculty to provide didactic, lab, and clinical instruction as assigned.
    • Design and implement the curriculum plan to meet requirements for the Program.
    • Conduct periodic assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of courses and program objectives.
    • Can render care in the operating room and maintains current preoperative care knowledge in the surgical technology field for patients of all ages.
    • Provide program information, academic and/or career advising to current and prospective students.
    • Serves as a liaison and resource for all clinical site staff and students.
    • Is accountable to the Program Coordinator.

    Essential Duties Summary


    • Assist with the day to day operations and input of the surgical programs; reports needs for inventory/supplies to the assistant coordinator.
    • Maintain current knowledge of discipline (via professional development), educational methodologies, CAAHEP/ARCSTSA accreditation standards and college and program policies and procedures.
    o Exhibit and uphold the values of professionalism (as defined by AST/ASA) at all times.
    o Comply with and demonstrate knowledge of policies contained in the most current Surgical Services Programs Manual.
    o Comply with mandated CAAHEP/ARCSTSA accreditation standards and core curriculum.
    o Participate in in-services, professional growth training, seminars and workshops as they become available.


    • Provide academic and career advising to current and prospective students and assist with management of student folders as assigned.
    o Counsel, advise, register or assist with registration for all surgical students.
    o Maintain current student records and/or online advising program for student advisement.
    o Counsel, refer, remediate, and tutor individual students as needed.


    • Supervise and provide didactic and clinical instruction as assigned while utilizing techniques and knowledge of the discipline that facilitates student learning.
    o Teach assigned classes, labs and clinic sessions on-campus and off-campus. Provide supervision of all assigned students and/or clinical groups.
    o Prepare and maintain course syllabi according to program and college standards.
    o Maintain and revise course content based on textbook changes, edition revisions or research.
    o Update didactic, laboratory or clinical assignments to be relevant, demonstrating evidence based practices.
    o Coordinate didactic material with learning activities between the clinic, lab, and classroom setting.
    o Comply with course, laboratory and clinic requirements and assignments; post grades in a timely manner.

    o Organize, create, and maintain all course related data such as attendance, records, grades, exams, and student evaluation of instruction.

    o Design and administer exams. Maintain exam banks to be congruent with published learning objectives.

    o Demonstrate competency in computer skills for didactic instruction and any computer skills required for the delivery of the components.


    • Attend and participate in program, division and college /meetings committees; work collaboratively with colleagues, businesses, advisory committees, and other educational partners.
    o Attend and participate in surgical program faculty meetings and surgical program advisory board.
    o Assist with program promotion and other clinical/educational meetings or activities.


    • Assist with correspondence, surveys, reviews, and reports as delegated by the Program Coordinator(s).
    o Orient and mentor new clinical adjunct faculty.
    o Work as a team player within the surgical programs department.


    • Assist with pinning ceremonies, graduation, student activities, and assist with application process to relevant state and/or national board examinations.
    • Conduct conferences with students and provide written documentation for student files.
    o Provide course specific midterm reports/advising for students as assigned.


    • Cooperate with the Program Coordinator(s) in conducting periodic assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of courses and program objectives.
    o Propose adjustments to course and/or clinics based on assessment outcomes.
    o Engage in self-evaluation activities and performance planning each academic year as defined by the Programs Coordinator and/or College.


    • If credentialed as a CST only, may be required to supervise FA students in their assignments as a surgical scrub for core ST experiences and facilitate and coordinate their clinical rotation with their clinical surgeon preceptor or CSFA clinical preceptor delegate.

    Required Qualifications
    Associate Degree required minimum for hire.


    Must have a minimum total of two years of experience, either in the operating room scrub role or as an instructor in surgical technology, or a combination of both, within the past five years.


    3 years of Operating Room experience either in the scrub role or as an instructor in surgical technology, or a combination of both, within the past five years.

    Certified Surgical Technologist (CST), or
    Certified Surgical Technologist/ Certified Surgical First Assistant (CST/CSFA) - dual certification is preferred, with
    Current BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support).

    Masters or Bachelor's degree
