Description
JOB DESCRIPTION:
Assists surgeons and nurses in the operating room by helping with patients, equipment preparation, aseptic technique, and surgical procedures. Prepares the operating room for surgery by gathering routine supplies, materials, instruments, and equipment; obtains special supplies as directed by the physician. Sets up and operates various specialized instruments, manual and powered equipment. Follows procedures for accounting for sharps, sponges, and instruments before and after surgery. Takes care of instruments and equipment, maintains inventory of sterile surgical supplies for immediate use, and operates sterilization equipment. Assists in assessing products, supplies, and equipment relevant to the operating room in areas like General, Gynecology, Obstetrics, Plastic Surgery, Minor Vascular Procedures, Orthopedics, and Ophthalmology - specifically cataract surgeries. Helps in preparing, transporting, and positioning patients for surgery while ensuring their comfort, safety, and privacy during the procedure. Observes patients for any signs of changing conditions and reports findings to the medical team promptly. Demonstrates expertise in sterile technique and infection control, maintaining a sterile environment. Cleans surgical instruments and equipment properly, prepares tissue and other specimens for laboratory analysis, and performs other duties as needed.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
High school diploma or equivalent required. Completion of a surgical technician training program or equivalent on-the-job training is necessary. Certification as a surgical technician or two years of relevant experience if not certified. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association is mandatory. Ability to work independently and float between less complex specialty areas like General Surgery, Gynecology, Obstetrics, Plastic Surgery, Minor Vascular Procedures, Orthopedics, and Ophthalmology - specifically cataract surgeries.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS (Medium): 20-50 lbs; 0-33% of the workday occasionally; 11-25 lbs, 34-66% of the workday frequently; 01-10 lbs, 67-100% of the workday constantly; Lifting up to 50 lbs max; Carrying objects weighing up to 25 lbs; Occasional to frequent standing and walking, occasional sitting, close eye work (computers, typing, reading, writing). Physical demands may vary based on assigned work area and tasks.

Environmental exposures include: Blood-borne pathogens, Bio-hazardous waste, Chemicals/gases/fumes/vapors, Communicable diseases, Electrical shock, Floor Surfaces, Hot/Cold Temperatures, Indoor/Outdoor conditions, Latex, Lighting, Patient care/handling injuries, Radiation, Shift work, Travel might be necessary. Personal protective equipment, such as respirators, is required; environmental conditions may vary based on assigned work area and tasks.
