    Job Duties


    Southern Virginia Mental Health Institute, a 72-bed Joint Commission accredited State Mental Health Facility, is seeking a part-time healthcare chaplain to facilitate non-denominational spiritual services for individuals with serious mental illness and substance misuse disorders to assist in the recovery process.

    This dynamic position offers great flexibility in scheduled work hours to include both evening and weekend hours, as well as both individual spiritual counseling and group sessions/services.


    Minimum Qualifications

    Master's degree in divinity and/or pastoral services from an accredited university.
    Ability to plan and implement both individual and group chaplain services to meet patient needs.
    Working experience as a chaplain.
    Ability to work flexible work hours to include evenings and weekends as needed.


    Additional Considerations

    Experience working with individuals with mental illness, substance misuse disorders and/or involvement in the judicial system.

    Under Virginia Code § and , the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services is prohibited from employing or using as volunteers, persons who have been convicted of specific "barrier" crimes or persons who may be the subject of pending "barrier" charges.

    DBHDS facilities are no longer required to ensure that all staff members are vaccinated against COVID-19. However, facilities encourage and educate staff on the benefits, and continue to offer COVID-19 vaccination programs to staff, residents/clients. Employees may be required to disclose immunization status for purposes of infection prevention and/or management of outbreaks.
