About This Position:

This position is part of the structural welding crew that fabricates, installs, and repairs steel bridge components, and the other crew replaces deficient bridges which cannot be let to contract in a short time frame and are beyond the Districts ability to install.

Minimum Qualifications


One year of the required experience for the following minimum qualifications must have been on-the-job experience:

Three years of experience or training in the welding trade; OR

Completion of a Technical Diploma or Associate of Applied Science welding program from a Louisiana Technical or Community College or equivalent program from other institutions plus one year of experience or training in the welding trade.

Job Duties and Other Information


Job Duties:

  • The incumbent performs specialized welding of aluminum ferrous, non-ferrous and design layout and fabricate components for fixed stainless steels. In able to and movable bridges; Performs all the duties of a waster welder on fixed and movable bridges, sometimes high in the air over land and water; preheats and cleans metal; inspects, brushes and grind welds made by himself and others. Also weld components for machinery and equipment; performs air ARC gouging operations. A WS certified in vertical and overhead welding techniques. Possesses a class "A" commercial driver's license for driving welding trucks and tool trucks with compressor trailers; brazes with oxygen and acetylene torch, ferrous and non-ferrous metals.
  • Functionally supervises statewide bridge maintenance gang in the absence of welder foreman. Directs and trains other welders and trades apprentices. Incumbent exercises functional supervision over members from other gangs - Mobile Equipment Operators 1 and 2 and Trades Apprentices on various jobs as needed. Also works unsupervised on small to medium jobs as needed.
  • Makes minor repairs and adjustments to equipment and performs user maintenance necessary to keep equipment clean and in good working order. Operates heavy trucks and other equipment when moving from job to job while at a job site.
  • Requisitions welding supplies, equipment, and materials.
