    Description

    Performs electroencephalographic examinations according to established standards and practices as ordered by a Physician.

    Job Responsibility

  • Schedules and performs EEG testing, as required
  • Orients patients of test purposes and procedures used to perform such testing.
  • Interviews patient to assess their current status and reviews existing information in patient's chart for confirmation of doctor's orders and to obtain and documents medications.
  • Communicates with ordering physician or lab manager to clarify unclear or inappropriate orders and communicates information about patient's status.
  • Recognizes and responds to patient's medical problems and physiological events, especially cardiac, respiratory and seizures to ensure safety and welfare of patients.
  • Provides safe recording environment: Verifies identity of patient. Attends to patient needs appropriately. Recognizes/responds to life threatening situations. Cleans electrodes after each procedure. Maintains instrument/equipment in good working order. Takes appropriate precautions to ensure electrical safety.
  • Explains test procedures including activation procedures.
  • Evaluates patient to document unusual or inappropriate behavior of seizure or pseudo seizure.
  • Prepares basic data sheet ("tech sheet") that includes patient information (name, age ID number, doctor, etc). Pertinent patient history and familial medical history. Current medications/sedation and time of last dosage. Diagrams skull defects or anomalies. Diagrams any modifications in electrode placement.
  • Follows appropriate method in patient electrode application: Adjusts electrode placement for anatomical defects or anomalies. Preps patient scalp prior to electrode application.
  • Documents working condition of digital EEG instrument: Calibrates system amplifiers. Verifies standard filter settings. Verifies sensitivity settings. Inputs biological (bio-cal) signal to all channels. Corrects or reports deviations as appropriate.
  • Obtains standard EEG.Customizes recording procedure, as required. Records electro cerebral inactivity (brain death). Records Neonatal EEG. Records pediatric EEG. Video-EEG recording. Differentiates artifacts from cerebral waveforms. Performs recordings in intensive care and cardiac care units, as required.
  • Instructs new technicians of clerical of lab procedures.
  • Utilizes department computer system to verify testing and check patient information.
  • Maintains log of patients and specific patient information.
  • Performs related duties as required.

  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, stretching, lifting, pulling, pushing, turning.
  • Job Qualification

  • High School Diploma or equivalent, required.
  • Graduate of an accredited technical school or course for EEG technicians, required. EEG certification, preferred.
  • Minimum of two (2) years hospital experience in patient care setting, required.
  • Experience using computer applications including Microsoft Word and hospital computer system, required.
  • Ability to read, write, and interpret complex technical information related to neurology.
