Position Function:

The department head provides academic and administrative leadership for a department of 22 faculty, three staff, and approximately 422 students.

The department head is responsible for budgetary matters; program development; student recruitment; human resource management and evaluation; providing quality service to students; and promoting a positive environment for teaching, research, and service.

The primary goals of the department head are to provide leadership for departmental programs and to assist faculty in meeting goals associated with instruction, scholarly activities, and service.

Department Profile:

The Department of Industrial Technology, Instructional Design, and Community College Leadership (ITIDCCL) at Mississippi State University offers master's degrees, an educational specialist degree, and doctoral degrees focusing on educational technology, instructional design, instructional technology, multimedia, distance education, community college teaching and leadership, and workforce development.

. The department offers two undergraduate degrees in information technology services and industrial technology.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Faculty support:

Recruit and retain a diverse faculty from peer institutions across the nation; coordinate and evaluate faculty workload; mentor faculty through the promotion and tenure process; evaluate faculty performance for promotion, tenure, salary increases, and dismissals; and support continuing professional development of faculty.

Departmental operation:

Collaborate with faculty in developing strategic plans and shared governance documents; monitor academic program offerings; ensure that university policies and procedures are implemented as they relate to the department and the students it serves; collaborate with faculty and staff in determining departmental strengths, weaknesses, and changes that are needed; manage the departmental budget and develop a revenue generation plan; maintain facilities and equipment to support faculty and departmental goals; and determine office and space allocations.

Communication:

Conduct monthly departmental and program coordinators' meetings; meet with the Dean of the College of Education to represent the interests of the department; assist with data collection for self-studies as well as departmental, college, and university reports; and encourage faculty to pursue external funding.

Other:

Coordinate advising of students; prepare course schedules; oversee graduate programs; advise students with curriculum problems; teach according to COE policy; manage according to department, college, and university policy; participate in professional development activities; participate in professional organizations; and perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
Earned doctorate in one of the department's areas of specialization (e.g., instructional systems, educational technology, workforce development, information technology services, industrial technology, engineering technology, community college leadership, and higher education leadership) and/or related area from an accredited university or college;

Qualify for the rank of Associate Professor with tenure at Mississippi State University.


Preferred Qualifications:
Qualify for rank of Full Professor;

Demonstrated experience in graduate education, including graduate teaching, advising, and directing theses and dissertations;

Demonstrated knowledge in more than one area of specialization, namely, Industrial Technology, Instructional Design, and Community College Leadership during professional career;

Successful administrative experience at some level in an educational environment;

Familiarity with accreditation standards and processes (e.g., ISTE, ATMAE, AECT, AERA, AACTE, NABTE, CAEP, and SACS);

Demonstrated experience in grant writing with success in securing and administering external funding;

Experience with fiscal management and oversight, including foundations/giving efforts;

Membership and leadership in applicable professional societies/organizations;

History of collegiality, consistency and fairness with personnel, and ability to foster collaboration and team building.
