    Job Description

    Job Description

Toole Design Group in Austin, TX is looking to hire a passionate and talented full-time Engineer I/II to join our team as part of the City of Austin's Active Transportation and Street Design Division (ATSD). Do you have a strong background in civil engineering with roadway/bikeway design or site development experience? Are you passionate about sustainability and the opportunity to work on challenging multimodal projects and construction management that make communities more livable and equitable? Do you enjoy seeing your projects get built and want to take part in big changes happening in Austin? If so, please consider joining our Austin team.

This Engineer I/II position with a focus on multimodal roadway design and active transportation earns a competitive salary and great benefits, including medical, dental, vision, life insurance, disability, a health savings account (HSA), and a flexible spending account (FSA). We practice what we preach and ensure that our employees also have access to transportation by providing them with financial incentives to bike, walk, or use transit for a better quality of life

    About Toole Design

Toole Design is the leading engineering, planning, and landscape architecture firm specializing in multimodal transportation. Since our start in 2003 as a single office in Maryland, we have expanded throughout the United States and Canada. Our talented team of planners, landscape architects and engineers are committed to delivering quality work that meets the needs of all people, regardless of age, ability, race or gender. We have been named a "best firm to work for" and have one of the lowest staff turnover rates in the industry.

Every project our employees deliver directly and positively affects our communities. We are industry-leading experts, and we work hard to encourage a collaborative and team-oriented environment.

A Day in the Life of an Engineer I/II

You are at the forefront of brainstorming creative solutions for challenging quick-build projects. Like larger capital projects, which are predominantly constructed with asphalt and concrete materials, quick-build projects are meant to be built quickly using a variety of materials, flexible delivery processes, and funding mechanisms that are developing rapidly. As a member of the augmented staff team, you will support an interdisciplinary team to deliver quick-build multimodal transportation infrastructure projects in a wide range of contexts, from roadway reconfigurations in highly urban settings to full intersection reconstructions to better serve all users. You will share your knowledge with a diverse team to develop project scopes, concept plans, and ultimately deliver final construction plan documents. You will use drafting programs such as MicroStation to fulfill project deliverables, while ensuring that our projects are consistently of the highest quality. You will also have access to key department leaders within the City of Austin's transportation department, who will help to set clear project goals and outcomes.

Rapid implementation is exciting and fast-paced, but you get to work with a close-knit, motivated team that is passionate about the work they do. You will get to see your projects evolve from paper to pavement, transforming the City of Austin and getting to use the facilities you helped design.

Qualifications of a Senior Civil Engineer/Roadway Engineer:

    • A Bachelor's or Master's degree in civil/transportation engineering
    • 0+ years (Engineer I), 2+ years (Engineer II) of transportation facility design experience, with a demonstrated interest in developing construction documents
    • Experience with Computer Automated Design (MicroStation/AutoCad)
    • Interest in multimodal and active transportation issues and design (specifically for bicycle, pedestrian, Safe Routes to School, and/or transit integration) for all ages and abilities
    • Excellent task and time management skills
    • Excellent communication skills
    • Experience with the Microsoft Office suite of applications

    You'll be great here if:

    • You enjoy participating in multi-disciplinary teams
    • You are passionate about sustainability and the opportunity to work on challenging multimodal projects that make communities more livable
    • You enjoy producing high-quality work products and seeing your projects get built
    • You have strong communication skills, whether written, verbal, or graphically

Work Schedule for an Engineer I/II

This full-time position typically works a flexible schedule of 40 hours a week. We also provide employees with the flexibility and necessary equipment to work from home 2-3 days per week. This position is part of our full-time, on-site staff augmentation contract we have with the City of Austin's Transportation Department.

Since 2017, a team of Toole Design engineers have provided full-time, on-site staff augmentation to the City of Austin's Transportation and Public Works Department to deliver Mobility Bond projects focusing on bikeway, pedestrian, and transit related infrastructure. The contract supports many of the City departments including Bikeways, Safe Routes to School, Sidewalk and Urban Trails, Speed Management, Vision Zero, and Transit Enhancement work in partnership with the Capital Metro Transportation Authority. Our vision for the Austin staff augmentation team is one that is talented, multidisciplinary, diverse, and cohesive.

Austin is one of the most exciting cities for multimodal transportation. Whether it's helping to deliver Austin's Mobility Bond projects, updating the City's Urban Trails and Sidewalks Plans, designing high-comfort all ages and abilities bikeways in the city, or developing standard details for rapid implementation, Toole Design is helping to shape the future of Austin, Texas.

Ready to Join our Austin Team? We understand your time is valuable, so we have a quick and easy application process. If you feel that you would be right for this Engineering position, please fill out our application by clicking on the link on this page.
