    The Research Specialist I, under general supervision performs semi-skilled, technical support research work involving performance of assignments requiring modification and adaptation to routine procedures.

    Work is performed under general supervision with evaluation based on the successful completion of tasks assigned.

    Required Education and Experience:

    • Bachelor's Degree in Biomedical Science, Animal Science or a related area, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
    • Four years of experience in a veterinary clinical setting, in veterinary research or related areas.

    Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    • Ability to discuss veterinary medicine in a clinical setting. Working with databases and sample management systems such as LIMS.
    • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Doctoral Degree and four years of experience in veterinary medicine.
    • Experience working with veterinarians and clients in a research and clinical setting. Strong ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others in a team environment. Excellent interpersonal skills. Excellent oral and written communication in English. Must be an effective communicator and very detail oriented.

    Responsibilities:

    • Veterinary medical biobank technical duties: Assists faculty, residents, and interns with collection of biological samples from client-owned patients. Obtains client consent, keeps detailed and accurate records, ensures compliance and follows laboratory procedures and SOPs for proper sample processing and shipment. May establish and update working SOPs for sample collection and processing, maintain laboratory equipment and knowledge of laboratory safety and compliance. Performs assays to assess quality of samples. Performs genetic analysis on some samples.
    • Veterinary clinical trial administration: Assists faculty, interns, residents and other technical staff with observations for clinical trial patients in the hospital. May obtain patient history and client consent, take patient vital signs, administer study drugs and placebo medications via IM, IV, PO, Sub-Q , assist with the collection of a patient's blood, urine, and/or tissues and submit samples to the appropriate department for processing. Maintains complete and accurate medical records and excellent communication between team members who are involved in clinical trials.
    • Administrative Support: Assists faculty, residents, and interns with clinical trial management. May assist in animal IACUC protocol preparation, design study data collection forms, perform data entry, prepare and maintain study binders, use social media for patient recruitment, work with Marketing and Communications to aid in recruitment efforts, ensure study compliance, obtain client follow up, and provide detailed record keeping. May perform various administrative tasks such as ordering and maintenance of supplies and shipping samples.
