    Description
    The Lemuel Shattuck Hospital under the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) is seeking caring, dynamic, and attentive applicants to provide an exceptional patient care experience that promotes healing and recovery in a compassionate public health hospital environment. A Physician Assistant (PA) is a health professional qualified by academic & clinical training to assist in the diagnostic and therapeutic management of patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings in medical disciplines. The PA works under the supervision but not necessarily in the presence of a qualified licensed physician (supervision includes rounds and review of patients, periodic written & verbal review of performance).

    Please note: The shift hours for this position are between 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (40 hours per week). Days off are weekends, with other days off as assigned. Covers 4 weekends and one holiday for vent and subacute inpatients.

    Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive):
    • Evaluation and examination of patients by performing tasks such as taking medical histories; conducting physical examination; taking body fluids such as blood, spinal fluid, and urine for laboratory tests. Prescribes medications and treatments.
    • Performs and/or interprets routine and specialized diagnostic studies, including, but not limited to laboratory procedures, radiologic studies, electrocardiographic tracings, allergy screening, Pap smears.
    • May perform therapeutic procedures, including injections, immunizations, paracentesis, suturing, wound care, incision and drainage of superficial infections, treatment of verrucae, cast application and follow-up of fractures and other surgical procedures.
    • Instructs and counsels patients regarding physical and mental health, including proper diet, disease prevention, therapy, normal growth and development, family planning, situation adjustment reactions, and other health care matters.
    • Rounds on community and correctional health patients in inpatient settings, recording patients progress notes, determining, and implementing therapeutic plans in conjunction with the supervising physician, and compiling and recording pertinent case summaries.
    • Assists in the delivery of services of patients requiring continuing care, including reviewing and monitoring treatment and therapy plans.
    • Covers 4 weekends and one holiday for vent and subacute inpatients
    • Performs essential evaluation and therapeutic procedures independently to respond appropriately to life-threatening situations.
    • Records and maintains medical notes of patient/client including initial workup, subsequent evaluations, unusual incidents or problems, and patient progress using standard recording procedures in order to provide complete continual, and up-to-date information as a basis for on-going reference and evaluation. Documentation requires knowledge of the electronic medical record in use at the facility.
    • Performs related work such as attending staff meetings and seminars.
    • Participates in hospital and department committees as delegated by the medical director.
    • Covers the rapid response team as scheduled.
    • Maintains a professional and ethical attitude, works efficiently in multidisciplinary teams.
    Required Qualifications:
    • Understanding of the techniques of physical diagnosis, including those used in taking a medical history, performing a physical evaluation, and synthesizing of the history, physical and laboratory findings to arrive at an accurate evaluation of the patient.
    • Knows of the fundamentals of electrocardiography.
    • Understands the principles of basic diagnostic radiology as they pertain to the use and interpretation of radiographs pertinent to primary case medicine.
    • Knowledge of the purpose and use of medical records.
    • Well versed in the terminology and standard abbreviations used in the field of medicine.
    • Knows the safety practices and procedures followed in a medical facility.
    • Knowledge of the standard methods of medical report preparation.

    About the Shattuck Hospital:

    Shattuck provides a safety net for patients referred by teaching and community hospitals that require extended care and is an essential health care provider for patients facing challenges accessing high quality healthcare. The hospital is on the front lines of the opiate epidemic, leading in the innovative treatment of substance use disorders.

    Shattuck provides a full range of services including acute care supported by a Medical Intermediate Care Unit, surgical services, telemetry, anesthesiology, pulmonary services, orthopedics, rehabilitative medicine, PICC/central line placement, advanced wound care, chemotherapy, and telemedicine. Comprehensive ancillaries and procedures include full clinical lab/pathology, CT and MRI, on-site pharmacy, sleep studies, EKG/ECHO and EEG.

    In addition to the main hospital, 25 outpatient clinics coordinate one-stop medical and mental health care and offer the only ambulatory surgical service among the state hospitals. The clinical environment is strictly governed by regulatory standards that mandate day to day interventions and services
