    Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit


    The UNC-NCSU Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering stresses the application of science and engineering, mathematical analysis, and computer techniques to biomedical problems.

    The research and entrepreneurship of the faculty, students, and staff aim to accumulate, generate, and disseminate biomedical engineering knowledge to improve health care for the benefit of the people of North Carolina, the nation, and the world.

    We will develop and support a rich array of outstanding health sciences research programs, centers, and resources. We will foster programs in the areas of basic, translational, mechanistic, and population research.

    Position Summary

    The Polacheck Lab is seeking a postdoctoral associate in the field of tissue engineering and biomaterials. Research activities as part of this position will involve engineering cell derived hydrogels to induce vascular morphogenesis. The successful candidate will join a research effort to build functional vasculature by engineering basement membrane scaffolds.

    The candidate will also design and build in vitro and in vivo platforms to study the role of perfusion in vascular network function and stability and to investigate interactions of engineered vasculature with host tissue.

    Specific activities include modification of cell derived extracellular matrix to allow light-induced crosslinking and culture and propagation of patient-derived fibroblasts and endothelial cells.

    The resulting materials will be introduced into microfluidic devices to develop next-generation vasculature-on-chip.

    Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

    PhD in biomedical engineering, chemical engineering, biology or related fields with a background in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.

    Preferred candidates would have experience in at least two of the following areas: mammalian cell culture, extracellular matrix materials, molecular biology, gene editing, microscopy and/or use of mammalian models.
