The Inpatient Pharmacy Supervisor serves as first-line supervisor as reflected on the organizational chart for inpatient pharmacists and the Inpatient Pharmacy Technician Supervisor.
DutiesADMINISTRATIVE/PROGRAM MANAGEMENT:
The Inpatient Pharmacy Supervisor is responsible for the implementation, revision, and interpretation of all Pharmacy Service policies and procedures in compliance with TJC, OIG, DEA, VHA and other accrediting body standards as they relate to the Inpatient Section of Pharmacy Service.
Supervises and coordinates the daily work in and between the various areas of the Central Pharmacy and satellite pharmacies, and manages staffing in coordination with other pharmacy managers, supervisors, and personnel.
The Inpatient Pharmacy Supervisor supervises, evaluates, and documents performance and counsels employees under his/her supervision.
The Inpatient Pharmacy Supervisor assists in interviewing, evaluating, and selecting new employees according to current Federal laws and VA policies regarding EEO and veterans preference.
Responsible for structuring training for pharmacy staff on inpatient pharmacy roles and responsibilities.
Works closely with Residency Program Directors, Acute Care Pharmacy Manager, and other program managers and supervisors as a liaison of Inpatient Pharmacy Services.
CLINICAL:The Inpatient Pharmacy Supervisor provides the framework, philosophy and environment for effective inpatient pharmacy staff participation in clinical and distributive activities to include:
Identification of any drug induced problems that may be affecting the patient or contributing to the need for therapy.
Recommendations to the attending and resident physicians for optimal management of drug-inducted problems either verbally and/or in writing.
Interpret laboratory data to evaluate the efficacy of drug therapy and to anticipate side effect, toxicity, or adverse effects.
Evaluate the various therapeutic alternatives; develop a therapeutic plan utilizing the most efficacious, least toxic, and most economic pharmacologic treatment modalities available.
Provides VA House staff with daily profile review, clinical expertise, and adverse drug reporting and drug utilization. Educate patients on the proper use and care of their medications through oral or written communications. Provide drug information and drug literature as requested to VA House staff.
DISTRIBUTIVE
Responsible for the professional, administrative management and supervision of pharmacists, technicians, and other supportive personnel, in providing a safe, timely, efficient, and cost-effective medication dispensing system.
Inpatient areas of responsibility include but are not limited to drug procurement, compounding and repackaging operations, automatic replenishment, and the distribution of unit dose, outpatient prescriptions, IV additives, chemotherapy, investigational drugs, and controlled substances.
Other duties as assigned.
