- Make-Ready Duties:
- Guide 2nd Press Operator in mounting plates with appropriate packing.
- Instruct 2nd Press Operator in setup and loading of feeder, ensuring proper feed board and delivery setup.
- Assist in ink fountain setup and positioning impression cylinders for ideal sheet squeeze.
- Prevent ink offset by setting the anti-offset sprayer.
- Help 2nd Press Operator with ink fountain settings and roller inking.
- Aid in image registration and sheet positioning.
- Ensure proper delivery setup for adequate press sheet jogging.
- Present press sheet for approval after verifying correct position, copy, and color match.
- Set counter, place register mark on plates, and monitor the O.K.d sheet throughout the press run.
- Press Run Duties:
- Maintain ink and water levels along with printing pressure adjustments.
- Monitor ink color density using a densitometer and ensure color accuracy.
- Check and maintain sheet register consistency.
- Operate at maximum allowed speeds without compromising quality.
- Determine load change frequency and oversee all changes.
- Supervise proper washing of press components to uphold quality.
- Meet required quantity for delivery specified by Press Room supervisor.
- Wash-up Duties:
- Direct 2nd Press Operator in proper press wash-up.
- Approve correct wash-up of ink fountain, rollers, blankets, and impression cylinder.
- Ensure proper gumming of plates or water rollers if needed.
- Prepare for the next job by obtaining job jacket and instructing press crew accordingly.
- Additional Responsibilities:
- Maintain meticulous records of materials usage and spoilage.
- Inspect and maintain unused materials for storage return.
- Conduct preventative maintenance on the press, including adjustments and cleaning.
- Assist in press repairs alongside the Mechanic.
- Train 2nd Press Operator for operational continuity in your absence and potential advancement.
- Support a safety-oriented culture and execute basic operator care and cleaning tasks.
- Gain familiarity with and assist other departments within the facility.
- 3-5 years of experience operating a large format sheetfed offset press, preferably in a folding carton environment.
- High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
- Basic computer proficiency with software utilization skills.
- Mechanical aptitude and technical skills.
