    The Safety Engineer is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining safety programs to ensure a secure and compliant work environment.

    This role involves identifying and mitigating potential hazards, conducting risk assessments, and fostering a safety culture within the organization.

    The Safety Engineer collaborates with various departments to enforce safety standards and regulations and provides expertise in accident prevention and emergency response.


    Technical Skill Requirements:

    • BS degree in environmental health & safety or occupational health or equivalent relevant professional experience
    years professional experience in an environmental health and safety position with a manufacturing company


    • Outstanding ability to conduct statistical analyses
    • Outstanding ability to conduct investigations and utilize judgment to determine root causes of accidents and identify safety and health hazards
    • Strong understanding of the 5S methodology and its application in diverse work environments
    • Excellent organizational and project management skills
    • Excellent analysis and mathematical skills
    • Excellent attention to detail in order to assure compliance to all local, state and federal regulations
    • Excellent interpersonal skills in which to effectively develop professional relationships with employees to gain support for the environmental health and safety program

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities


    • Ensure compliance with regulatory agencies
    a. OSHA, EPA, DOT, Hazardous Waste

    b. Implement and administer programs to maintain compliance


    • Provide direction, implement and coordinate 5S program for facility
    • Support ISO 14001 programs
    a. Communicate, evaluate and train associates on ISO 14001


    • Provide support for accident and injury investigations
    a. Provide training to ensure effective investigation is completed

    b. Identify applicable legal standards and regulations to situation to determine if compliance is an issue

    c. Assist in identification of preventative measure to avoid recurrence


    • Support for environmental health and safety issues
    a. Identify weaknesses in current environmental health and safety program or employee

    awareness/knowledge

    b. Formulate plans to implement programs to address weaknesses

    c. Conduct studies to assess compliance to regulations and implement corrective action

    d. Provide control of chemical room and assess Production needs of chemicals

    e. Follow up to ensure training is completed and safety hazards to workers are minimized

    f. Order safety supplies


    • Support HR department on workers compensation issues
    a. Confirmation of authenticity of workers compensation claim

    b. Assist in management of workers compensation claims and re-entry job assignments to minimize costs

    c. Assure preventative measures are implemented to avoid recurrence

    d. Assure OSHA log is maintained


    • Support of industrial hygiene activity conducted at site
    a. Confirm necessary education and training is implemented to maximize effectiveness of program


    • Communicate and inform company management of inherent safety or environmental risk and appropriate corrective action

    This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities.

    Environment and Conditions

    Contacts


    The incumbent spends approximately 15-50% of his/her time developing and maintaining business contacts within the organization and up to 15% of his/her time with external contacts.

    The purpose of these contacts is to communicate safety and environmental health information to employees, to train employees on safety and environmental health programs, to ensure adherence to safety and environmental health regulations, to investigate accidents or workers compensation situations, to communicate with governmental agencies, to communicate with insurance providers and to communicate with legal staff members.

    Working Conditions

    This position occupies a typical production floor environment. Exposure to weather elements is not likely. Incumbents are not likely to drive a vehicle while performing job responsibilities.

    Incumbents spend approximately 25% sitting, 40% standing and 35% walking in the course of this position and are unlikely to lift anything greater than 35 pounds.

    Incumbents will use the following office machines while performing job duties:
    computer, printer, copier, fax, and calculator. Also uses OSHA, environmental and ISO14000 manuals.
