    ESSENTIAL DUTIES, FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIESScrubs daily, under professional nurse supervision, for many different advanced and complex types of surgeries which may include:General Surgery
    • Laparoscopic and Open Cholecystectomies with Common Duct Exploration, Laparoscopic and open Nissen Fundoplication's, Appendectomies, Hernias, Thyroidectomy, etc.

    Obstetrics/Gynecology
    • Caesarian Sections, Hysterectomies, Dilatation & Curettage, Tubal Ligations, Laparoscopic Procedures, Cystoscopies, Hysteroscopy, major Pelvic Reconstruction, etc.

    Urology
    • Cystoscopies, etc.
    Minor Orthopedic & Podiatry
    • Carpal Tunnel Release, Ulnar Nerve Transposition, PIP and MP Joint Replacement, Toe Amputations, Bunnionectomies, foot and leg (AKA & BKA) amputations, etc.

    Thoracic surgery
    • Emergency trauma cases, thoracoscopy and thoracotomy, etc.

    ENT
    • Myringotomies, typmanoplasties, septoplasties, rhinoplasties, etc.

    Ophthalmology
    • Cataract extractions, pterygiums, etc.

    Endoscopic Procedures
    • EGD, Colonoscopy, Sigmoidoscopy, etc.
    Supplies surgeons with proper instruments, sutures, sponges, and equipment. Responsible for maintaining inventory in specific services and areas as assigned, i.e., suture, laparoscopic supplies and other specialty equipment.
    Ascertains with the professional nurse the accuracy of the sponge, needle and instrument counts.
    Scrubs, gowns, and gloves for surgical procedures, as well as to gown and glove the surgeons and their assistants. Prepares the sterile table with instruments, equipment, supplies, and medications/solutions as needed, for surgical procedures.

    Checks to see that the equipment is in good working order, i.e., Electrosurgical Units, Oscillating and Saggital saws, Laparoscopic equipment with camera and TV monitor, light sources, and all Cysto/Uteroscopic equipment.

    Assists surgical team as needed with administration of life saving measures i.e., oxygen, emergency supplies for the physician and/or anesthetist as needed, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

    Maintains highest standards of sterile technique during procedure.

    Helps in draping the sterile field (back table, mayo stand, OR table, etc.).Assists in preparing the room and equipment for the next patient.

    Takes initiative in reporting equipment in need of repairs and low levels of supplies.

    Disassembles and reassembles surgical instruments other equipment requiring cleaning (within the scope of instructed nursing personnel duties) and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization.

    Corrects breaks in aseptic techniques by any person, e.g., physician, medical student, or nursing personnel in an appropriate manner to provide optimum patient care.

    Assists in the establishment and updating of surgeons on procedural cards for surgical reference/preference.
    Completes all yearly Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) required training by the indiciated due dates.
    Uses and evaluates new supplies and equipment for future purchase or replacement of other supplies. Presents evaluations to the operating room staff and supervisor.

    Checks patients' charts, identifies patient, and verifies surgery to be performed with consent forms and retrieving laboratory/test results from computer.

    Assists the Nurse/Surgical team in translating key information of medical importance to the patient and family. Their surgical knowledge and expertise greatly enhance the patients' understanding and outcome.
    Rotates with other team members in taking operating room stand-by call for emergency during evenings, nights, weekends and holidays.
    Acts as an assistant to the surgeon during the operation under direct supervision of that surgeon.

    Assists surgeon in exposure, homeostasis, and other technical functions to carry out a safe operation with optimal results for the patient.

    Assists, promotes, and supports compliance with established CMS standards.
    Performs other duties as assigned.


    MANDATORY MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSExperience:
    Six (6) months healthcare experience

    Education:
    Certification from an accredited school of Surgical Technician/Technology or two (2) years additional years of direct experience

    Certificate:


    Obtain valid certification as a Surgical (Scrub) Technician or Surgical (Scrub) Technologist within one (1) year from date of hire.

    Valid American Heart Association (AHA) certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and maintain certification.
