    Description

    POSITION SUMMARY:


    The Traditional Medicine Supervisor, under the direction of the Division Director (Health), is responsible for providing supervisory and administration functions for the Traditional Medicine Program.

    The position is responsible for directing and participating in the development and implementation of Traditional Medicine Program goals, objectives, policies, and procedures, staffing and program strategic planning and daily operations.

    The position is responsible for preparing and monitoring budgets, preparing reports and strategic planning, staffing, scheduling for clinics, assisting the Traditional Practitioners, and providing training and support to the program's staff.


    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
    (includes, but is not limited to, the following)


    • Supervises and provides training and support to program personnel, volunteers and key support staff, monitors payroll, leave time, schedules patient appointments and healer clinic hours, hiring, disciplinary actions and staffing.
    • Performs administrative functions such as processing vouchers, personnel requisitions, personnel acquisition forms, and scheduling trainings in collaboration with other divisions.
    • Assesses training and educational development of staff in cultural and traditional Anishinaabe ways.
    • Maintains departmental records.
    • Prepares, plans, develops, monitors and modifies the budget as required.
    • Ensures proper staffing to assist Traditional Practitioners with the dispensing of traditional medicine prescriptions and following up with patients.
    • Monitors and coordinates the harvest and preparation of traditional medicines ensuring the traditional medicines are kept stocked.
    • Collaborates with other departments to include culture and traditions on healing; i.e., setting up traditional teachings and classes regarding traditional practices/ceremonies and information about the Anishinaabe traditions.
    • Schedules and provides for ongoing cultural in-service training workshops, retreats, fasts, feasts and provides and schedules ceremonial services for clients; fasts, feasts, camps, and sweat lodges.
    • Represents Traditional Medicine Program at meetings, committees, and provides cultural components to be integrated into the topics discussed or being planned.

    • Provides opinion and expertise on traditional ways for other departments and grant applications.
    • All other job-related duties as assigned.

    PHYSICAL

    REQUIREMENTS:
    Position medium with lifting of 50 pounds maximum and frequent lifting/carrying up to 25 pounds.

    Physical factors include constant use of near/midrange/far vision, color/field of vision, bending, frequent standing, walking, carrying/lifting, stooping, kneeling, reaching, manual handling, use of hearing, smell, typing, occasional sitting/pushing, climbing and crawling.

    Working conditions include frequent exposure to weather, extreme heat/cold, wet/humidity, noise and air quality; occasional exposure to sweat lodges and fasting camps.

    Potential hazards include frequent exposure to moving mechanical parts, computer use, equipment use (cutting, grinding, digging tools), client contact, computer use and insects, pests and wildlife.

    Personal protective equipment/clothing include outdoor gloves/gear, boots and hardhats.


    REQUIREMENTS:

    Education:
    High School diploma or equivalent required. Associates Degree in Plants, Botany, Biology, Environmental Sciences or Environmental Health preferred.

    Experience:

    Minimum of 2 years of experience working with Anishinaabe plant medicines of the Great Lakes region and 1 year of supervisory experience required; 5 years of experience preferred.

    Experience with budget preparation required.

    Certification/License:
    Will be required to undergo and successfully pass a background check. Must maintain a good moral character standing. Must have a valid driver's license and be insurable by the Sault Tribe Insurance Department. Must comply with annual driver license review and insurability standards with the Sault Tribe Insurance. Will be required to complete and pass pre-employment drug testing.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
    Must have detailed knowledge of traditional Anishinaabe culture, language and ceremonial practices. Must have working knowledge of plants, traditional picking methods, and preparation of herbal medicines. Must have detailed knowledge of budget preparation. Must have basic knowledge of supervision principles and staffing plans. Knowledge of clinic scheduling practices and procedures preferred. Must be able to use word processing, spreadsheet and database software.

    Must be able to prepare clear, concise, thorough, meaningful, and grammatically correct written reports, letters, memoranda, policy and procedural drafts, and other written documents.

    Must be able to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, in a diverse range of audiences and settings. Must have excellent public relation/customer service skills and be able to exhibit a friendly and positive attitude. Must be able to establish and maintain effective communication with co-workers, supervisors and the general public. Must be able to work extended hours when needed. Must be flexible and available to work various shifts, including nights, weekends and holidays. Must have years sobriety. Must maintain confidentiality. Native American preferred.
