    Who we are looking for:

    The American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), the global professional society for oncology professionals, seeks a rigorous, collaborative, and innovative financial leader to serve as its next Chief Financial Officer. Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer & Executive Vice President and in close collaboration with ASCO's staff and volunteer leadership, the Chief Financial Officer will steward a complex organization including varied tax-exempt entities, endowments, real estate, sponsored research, overseas activities, federal funding, and a new enterprise business system. ASCO requires an astute finance professional who can balance the overarching financial strategy alongside day-to-day execution to maintain the highest standards of fiscal management and oversight. The CFO is a critical thought partner and trusted advisor to the CEO, COO, Board Treasurers, and other key internal and external stakeholders on all financial and business matters. As ASCO pursues its strategic goals aimed at increasing access, advancing the profession, and transferring knowledge, they need a forward-thinking financial leader to effectively steward their fiscal resources, maintain state-of-the-art enterprise systems, sustain operational excellence, uphold the highest standards of compliance and security, and foster a diverse, equitable and inclusive culture. The next Chief Financial Officer is expected to bring exceptional leadership and oversight to ASCO's strong financial portfolio, which includes approximately $200M in annual operating revenue and $285M in cash and investments across the Society, Association, and Conquer Cancer. Working in close partnership with the CEO, COO, three Boards of Directors, senior leadership, and external advisors, the CFO will be charged with providing effective financial information and strategies in a transparent, innovative, and collaborative manner. The ideal candidate will be an astute financial leader who is well versed in all facets of strategic resource management and fiscal oversight. The CFO must be a highly accomplished financial leader with strong technical knowledge coupled with the ability to employ best practices and sound business processes. The next CFO will have a proven track record of high-level financial planning and operational execution within a similarly complex organization with a variety of funding streams. They will be well versed in digital transformation and a proven champion of financial system upgrades and current best practices. Success in this role will be measured by effective financial stewardship, rigorous and innovative operational oversight, a focus on compliance, and strong collaboration and management skills. In addition, candidates must possess strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills in order to engage with a broad set of internal and external constituents. As the principal financial leader and expert for ASCO (Society and Association) and Conquer Cancer, the CFO must be committed to the highest ethical and professional standards. This is an Alexandria, VA based position.

    Key Responsibilities

    With ambitious leadership, sustained growth, and a strong financial position, the CFO will be instrumental in supporting key strategic initiatives at ASCO and Conquer Cancer. To this end, the CFO will provide strategic and operational oversight to the Finance and Administration Department with responsibility for accounting, finance, forecasting, strategic planning, business planning, internal costing and reporting, budgeting and resource allocation, and deal analysis and negotiations. The CFO will lead property and facilities management and office services. The CFO will lead a team that provides strong financial support and service to internal departments and entities through reporting, planning, and budget development. In addition, the CFO will oversee all fiscal and fiduciary responsibilities for the Society and the Association, orienting and advising three separate Boards of Directors and their respective Finance, and Audit committees and helping the volunteer Treasurers and Audit Chairs carry out their fiduciary duties. With the support of over 20 staff, the CFO is responsible for:

    • Partnering with the COO and advising the Executive Leadership Team and Conquer Cancer CEO to develop and carry out comprehensive, future-oriented financial strategies that support the overarching strategic priorities of ASCO.
    • Orienting, guiding, and responding to the volunteer leadership of each entity with respect to financial oversight.
    • Supporting the Society's, Association's, Conquer Cancer's, and their affiliates' programs and objectives by providing clear, reliable, actionable financial information and advice.
    • Providing oversight of all financial operations and reporting, ensuring compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, regulatory, compliance, federal funding, and general audit requirements.
    • Overseeing the preparation and filing of applicable federal, state, and international tax returns, business licenses, registrations, and other reports. Respond to governmental inquiries.
    • Overseeing the engagement of independent auditors and investment advisors and carrying out internal audit or operational review under the oversight of the Audit Committees.
    • Guiding the development and implementation of ASCO's budgets from multiple funding sources and for multiple entities, as well as monitoring progress and presenting financial metrics and reports to key internal and external stakeholders including Board committees.
    • Supporting the implementation and continuous upgrade of enterprise business systems and integration with vendor systems.
    • Furnishing financial and strategic analysis of all proposed projects and their short- and long-term impact on the overall financial picture of the organization.
    • Developing and maintaining strong internal controls and cybersecurity protocols to mitigate risk as well as safeguard assets.
    • Overseeing and tracking the performance of ASCO's and Conquer Cancer's investments in compliance with the Investment Policies of ASCO and Conquer Cancer.
    • Establishing trust and credibility throughout the organization and with the Boards as an effective developer of solutions to business challenges.
    • Overseeing property, facilities, and office management, including leasing management, capital project planning and management, emergency management/business continuity, and real estate management.
    • Managing, developing, and overseeing a talented, diverse, and dedicated team. Providing coaching and mentoring as well as ensuring opportunities for ongoing professional development.
    • Fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment.
    • Shepherding an institutional culture of trust, transparency, compliance, innovation, and collaboration.
    • Serving as a staff leader in communications and relationships with the broader ASCO community.
    • Establishing and maintaining standards to support the delivery of customer-service oriented financial services to ASCO departments and entities.

    Experience and Professional Qualifications

    Required Education and Experience

    • Master's degree with a focus in business administration, finance, or related discipline.
    • 20+ years of progressively responsible experience in a senior financial management capacity and 7+ years of leadership experience in a non-profit or comparable organization.
    • A proven track record of effective fiscal management in a complex environment, with significant experience in tax-exempt organizations.
    • A passion for ASCO's mission and vision.
    • A credible fiscal leader with the ability to balance overarching financial strategy with day-to-day execution.
    • Experience managing several business operations departments of a complex organization, ideally including knowledge of government appropriations and the federal budget cycle process.
    • Excellent financial expertise coupled with strong technical knowledge, digital literacy, and the ability to develop and execute short-term and long-term goals.
    • A collegial and collaborative leadership style with a commitment to open communication and consensus building.
    • Proven ability to recruit and retain a diverse and talented team of professionals and develop their expertise.
    • An ability to work effectively with a broad set of stakeholders including Boards, funding agencies, donors, bankers, auditors, property managers, and investment advisors.
    • Strong communication skills with the ability to relay complex financial information in accessible terms.

    Preferred Education and Experience

    • MBA and/or CPA license is preferred
    • Oracle Financial Cloud Business System experience
