    I. DEPARTMENT INFORMATION

    Job Description Summary:

    The George Washington University Elliott School of International Affairs (ESIA) is one of the world's leading schools of international affairs and one of the largest schools of international affairs in the United States. Located in the heart of Washington, D.C., its mission is to educate the next generation of international leaders, conduct research that advances understanding of important global issues, and engage the policy community in the United States and around the world.

    The Sigur Center for Asian Studies is a research institute and the academic home of the ESIA Asian Studies Program. Its mission is to increase the quality and broaden the scope of scholarly research and publication on Asia, promote US-Asian scholarly interaction and educate a new generation of students, scholars, analysts, and policymakers.     In support of these missions, we seek an outstanding individual to be the Assistant Center Director, Sigur Center for Asian Studies. This position is approximately 20-25% research and 75-80% administrative. Reporting to the Director of the Sigur Center, the Assistant Center Director will perform administrative duties and provide strategic input in support of relationship building. The successful candidate is expected to conduct their own research and also to handle focused outreach, operational, and administrative functions for the Sigur Center for Asian Studies.

    Administrative & Outreach responsibilities include:
    • Organize, manage, and execute four annual conferences on Taiwan and Cross-Straits Relations.
    • Provide administrative support for the Taiwan Education and Research Program.
    • Build relationships with key partners.
    • Closely collaborate with and support Asian Studies faculty and directors.
    • Manage budgets, proposals, and annual reports.
    • Write grants and support the grant writing of faculty.
    • Closely collaborate with the research and finance administrators.
    • Build relationships with internal colleagues and offices throughout the Elliott School and the University.


    Research responsibilities include:

    • Conduct research related to Taiwan and contribute to Asian Studies scholarship.
    • Develop and provide guest lectures in GW courses related to Taiwan.
    • Present research findings in oral presentations.
    • Submit work for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
    • Attend Sigur Center research-related events and participate in other research activities.


    Performs other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

    This is a hybrid position which means some days will be in the office on campus and some days will be remote.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    Qualified candidates will hold a BA/BS in a related discipline plus 5 years of relevant professional experience. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position.

    Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications:

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Educational background in international affairs or related disciplines is highly desired; specialty in Asian Studies is preferred.
    • Research interest in Taiwan.
    • Experience in administration, operations, and/or program management. Specifically, experience with academic departments or research centers is highly desirable.
    • Experience and interest in planning high profile events and conferences.
    • Competency with managing budgets.
    • Conversational Chinese language ability.

    Typical Hiring Range

    $68, $99,603.05 How is pay for new employees determined at GW?
