    Seventh Grade Language & Literature (English)

    Lausanne Collegiate School seeks a full-time teacher of seventh grade Language & Literature. There are approximately 65 students in seventh grade and 900 students on the campus.

    Lausanne Collegiate School is a coeducational, college preparatory, PK2 (age 2) through 12th grade International Baccalaureate World School located in Memphis, Tennessee whose student body represents 77 different countries. Lausanne develops the individual intellects, talents, creativity and character of boys and girls through student-centered teaching, global diversity, and encouraging, challenging and engaging learning. Its mission is "to prepare each of its students for college and life in a global environment."

    Qualifications:

    • 2+ years of teaching experience
    • Bachelor's Degree from accredited university
    • Master's Degree preferred
    • Middle Years Programme (MYP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) experience preferred
    • General knowledge of curriculum and instructional best practices for adolescent students
    • Strong communications, public relation and interpersonal skills
    • Strong passion for adolescent students and understanding of developmental milestones

    Individual Responsibilities:

    • Responsible for teaching all students in seventh grade; 5 sections
    • Serve as a seventh grade advisor
    • Develop and implement plans for the curriculum programs assigned
    • Work cooperatively and maintain professionalism with the grade level team, full middle school faculty and staff, and the parent community
    • Create a classroom environment conducive to learning in an IB setting
    • Manage student behavior in the classroom
    • Implement individualized learning plans
    • Establish and maintain open lines of communication with students, parents and the community
    • Build impactful and meaningful relationships
    • Participate in meetings and committees as assigned
    • Demonstrate professional, ethical, and responsible behavior
    • Typical divisional duties (carpool, lunch, free time) are assigned as needed
    • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk, sit, and stand
    • Proficient in using technology in the classroom to engage students and explore the curriculum
    • Support the school's mission and vision statements, and the Lausanne Way
    • Other duties as assigned by the Head of School or Head of Middle School

    Course Description:

    Students in seventh grade Language & Literature focus on the four Language Arts components: writing, reading, speaking and listening. Students in this course are expected to do the following: engage in independent, self-selected readings as well as teacher-assigned readings; read for meaning and thematic analysis in literature; make associations and connections between literature and real-world concepts; analyze different types of selections (such as short stories, novels, primary source documents, biographies, informational literature, and other non-fiction); increase vocabulary skills, and evaluate and draw inferences from informational text using a variety of sources and media.

    Students are also expected to self and peer edit multiple genres of writing. Students will write persuasive compositions where they support their claims with evidence, explain the purpose of using certain evidence, and properly use MLA format regarding format and in-text citations. Students will also practice summarizing, responding to literature, and other skills related to their journey towards becoming prepared for the eighth grade in compliance with the MYP standards. Students will study grammar and syntax to increase verbal and written skills. Students will also practice their discourse and strategic competence in speaking and listening comprehension skills through their active listening skills, which are composed of several stages; receiving, understanding, evaluating, remembering, and responding to information received through the vocal transmission.
