    The Birmingham VA Health Care System in downtown Birmingham; Alabama is recruiting for a Supervisor Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (Cardiovascular-Interventional) to work in the Cardiac Cath Lab interventional procedures areas within the medical center.

    This is an OPEN CONTINUOUS ANNOUNCEMENT and will remain open until September 30, 2024.

    The Supervisor Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (Cardiovascular-Interventional) has the overall responsibility for the coordination and performance of all Interventional Cardiology areas and OR hybrid suite.

    The incumbent directs the development and implementation of services and treatment to patients through the supervision, mentoring, and oversight of assigned clinical staff.

    He/she works closely with the technologists, cardiologists, clinicians, Imaging Program Administrator, and clerical staff to assure optimum quality control, efficient coordination of activities, high quality diagnostic/therapeutic exam results, and patient satisfaction.

    The Supervisor DRT (CV) utilizes specialized equipment to perform diagnostic digital subtraction interventional procedures and complex vascular and nonvascular interventional and therapeutic procedures.

    This specialty requires that he/she scrub, circulate, monitor, and operate equipment on the most complex examination and treatment procedures including intra-aortic balloon pump therapy for critical ill patients.

    He/she assure medications are properly labeled and available for physician administration. He/she have a functional knowledge of the cardiac medications use, appropriate doses, and side effects. He/she oversee training and mentoring other technologists, students, and cardiology fellows. He/she work with the cardiology nurse manager with quality control and performance improvement activities.

    He/she work with physician to complete both diagnostic and interventional invasive cardiac procedures including:

    LHC, RHC, PTCAs, Stent placement, IABP, IVUS, pressure wires, pericardiocentesis, temporary pacemakers, radial artery procedures, peripheral procedures, permanent pacemaker placement and AICD placement.

    Monitors the progression of procedures requiring independent judgment and anticipate need to provide specific instrument and/or catheters.

    Also, as a Cardiac Cath Lab Technologist he/she has the intimate knowledge of vascular and coronary anatomy and physiology related to cardiovascular function.

    He/she is responsible for adhering to all departmental, service, hospital, agency, and national regulations and policies. The incumbent will work in the Cardiology Section of Imaging Services in the BVAHCS operating medical diagnostic equipment.

    In all interventional procedure cases, a patient consent form must be obtained. Sterile technique must always be practiced. The incumbent performs routine, daily cleaning of assigned area, and notifies supervisor of inventory changes.

    The incumbent practices radiation safety to reduce exposure to patient, staff and self. This is achieved by the using the properly radiation apparel (aprons, thyroid shield, lead glasses) and collimation.

    Radiation monitor for all individuals are always required to be worn during all procedures whether observing or participating to assure compliance to radiation safety policy.

    The incumbent must also be aware of and practice the safety policies/procedures of the medical center and participate in quality assurance activities as directed.

    The incumbent maintains records and files of exams performed on patients.

    Edits and when necessary registers patients in the computerized Radiology Information System (RIS) as well as the work list management portion of the HIS-RIS interface.

    The incumbent utilizes the computerized patient record system (CPRS) to assist with accessing pertinent patient data as required.

    He/she will be familiar with the Veterans Health Information and Technology Architecture (VistA) computer system to access other information and documentation as needed while assuring correct CPT codes are utilized and documenting items used in the procedures (contrast, implant, etc.).

    The incumbent is responsible for ensuring adequate levels of supplies in assigned areas. He/she must report equipment malfunctions and possible staffing issues to upper leadership in a timely manner. The incumbent must be professional, cooperative and be able to work with other employees. He/she must demonstrate professionalism to promote good relations with other services.

    Qualifications


    Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.


    Basic Requirements:

    • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
    • Certification. All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) (R).
    • Education: Completed a a full-time training course of at least 24 months duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate's degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from schools accredited by the ARRT and certification by the ARRT in radiology.
    • English Language Proficiency. DRTs must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d).


    May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).


    Grade Determinations:
    GS-10

    Experience.

    At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level directly related to the position being filled that demonstrates the clinical competencies described at that level.


    The technologist functions as a supervisor for a group of DRTs at the GS-9 level and below which may include support staff.

    The technologist evaluates new products and equipment, making recommendations to supervisor concerning upgrades/new purchases that would improve operations.

    The technologist informs higher level management of anticipated staffing variances and informally recommends promotions, reassignments, or other personnel changes such as retention or release of probationary employees, and recognition of superior performance in the diagnostic radiologic area.

    The technologist directs the development and implementation of services and treatment to patients through the supervision, mentoring, and oversight of assigned clinical staff.

    Experience must demonstrate practice skills in a specialty area or in administration demonstrating progressively more professional competency and judgment.

    Physical Requirements:
    The incumbent usually works standing and has patient contact involving occasional heavy lifting, and/or assisting patients.

    The computer area of the in vivo section calls for long periods of working around loud noise, prolonged concentration and long periods of sitting, while working under pressure as a deadline to produce accurate patient test results.
