- Formulates policy options that assess the impact of Sudan regional issues and developments on AF Bureau and Department foreign policy plans/objectives.
- Drafts foreign policy proposals, memoranda, and program directives, policy recommendations, options, and strategies for the Office and Bureau on U.S. policy towards Sudan.
- Represents the AF bureau in department and interagency discussions with authority to speak for the Bureau on Sudan related issues.
- Monitors developing political situations in Sudan to effectively lead a range of consultations, negotiations, and public presentations, including representing the Office, the Bureau, or the Department in interagency discussions and working groups.
- Independently plans and carries out supervisory responsibilities, including recruiting, supervising Federal employees, third party contractors, detailees, and others.

This position is located in the Bureau of African Affairs, Office of Sudan and South Sudan (AF/SSS). The incumbent serves as a senior Foreign Affairs Officer, responsible for advancing U.S. objectives in Sudan.
