Overview:
We are seeking a detail-oriented and technically skilled Utility & Earthwork Takeoff Specialist to join our estimating team. This role is critical in supporting accurate and competitive bids by performing comprehensive quantity takeoffs for underground utilities and site earthwork projects.
The ideal candidate will have strong experience interpreting civil construction drawings, understanding grading and utility plans, and working within digital takeoff and CAD-based systems. This position plays a key role in ensuring accurate quantities for bidding and seamless integration into estimating and project management workflows.
Responsibilities:
- Perform detailed quantity takeoffs for: (1) Storm, sanitary, and water utilities, (2) Structures (manholes, catch basins, inlets, vaults), (3) Pipe by size, material, and depth classification, (4) Fittings and appurtenances, (5) Earthwork quantities including cut/fill, trench volumes, backfill, bedding, and topsoil
- Analyze grading plans, profiles, cross-sections, and utility plan sheets.
- Use Bluebeam Revu, CAD software (e.g., Carlson or similar), and estimating tools to extract quantities and generate reports.
- Calculate trench widths, depths, and volumes using defined company standards and structure-based logic.
- Organize and format takeoff data for import into estimating systems.
- Collaborate with estimators, project managers, and field teams to validate scope and clarify discrepancies.
- Maintain structured documentation and organized digital takeoff files.
- Work within evolving internal systems and automation tools, providing feedback for continuous process improvement.
- Manage multiple project assignments while meeting bid deadlines.
Qualifications:
- Proven experience reading and interpreting civil construction drawings.
- Strong background in underground utility and/or earthwork takeoffs.
- Experience with Bluebeam Revu required; familiarity with Carlson, Trimble, or other CAD-based earthwork software preferred.
- Understanding of trenching standards, bedding requirements, and utility installation practices.
- High level of accuracy and attention to detail.
- Ability to manage multiple projects in a deadline-driven environment.
- Comfortable adapting to new systems, templates, and automation workflows.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
