Essential functions (job duties):
Perform scientific techniques or research protocols. Assist the Principal Investigator in designing and performing protocols. Design and perform experiments. Collect and log research data. Participate in implementing research objectives, ensuring compliance with all legal, regulatory and protocol guidelines. Assist other lab members with experiments as required. May mentor research assistants and students.
Evaluate and perform preliminary analysis of the data using graphs, charts or tables to highlight the key points of the research results collected in accordance with the research protocols as stipulated.
Maintain the laboratory work areas including routine maintenance on laboratory equipment as required. Order and organize required research supplies and records. Maintain cleanliness and organization of work station.
With the assistance of the mentor, find and write research grant proposals with the goal of obtaining additional research grant funding.
Unique duties:
Seeking a highly motivated and independent scientist to join a collaborative research group to study the interactions of diverse organisms in aquatic environments and their potential impact on human health.
As a post-doctoral researcher, you will use and develop innovative advanced molecular, microbiological, bioinformatic, and physiological techniques to analyze bacterial, viral, and eukaryotic organisms of surface and other waters in the Great Lakes region and how they may be affected by anthropogenic sources, including sanitary, storm, and treated wastewaters.
Current and prospective funded projects include developing technologies to study changes of organisms and genetic markers with time, place, and process, including organisms that are vectors for human disease, and investigating the diversity of molecular and functional interactions of aquatic organisms.
An interest in taxonomy and molecular phylogeny is desirable but not required. An interest and experience in community outreach about science and the environment is desirable but not required.Qualifications:
Education Doctorate degree
Requires advanced knowledge in a field of science or learning, predominantly intellectual in character, acquired by a prolonged course of specialized intellectual instruction.
Job-related experience can include doctorate training. Experience performing basic research techniques, preferred. Must have distinguished themselves in research, as documented by peer-reviewed publications. Prior recipient of funding for research based on individual achievements is desirable but not required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Ability to work independently. Ability to collect, analyze, summarize and interpret research findings in reports and communicate results to the field. Knowledge of and experience with current scientific integrity principles.
Strong written and oral communication skills suitable for scientific publication and presentations and for preparing grant proposals to secure funding for research.
Excellent time management and organization skills.Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work with others in a collaborative environment. Microsoft office software skills.
Preferred qualifications:
Successful applicants will have a Ph.
D in a Life Science field or in Engineering with an environmental or biomedical emphasis.
- Experience with molecular biology and bioinformatics techniques - Knowledge of biosafety methods, up to BSL- Familiarity with aquatic organisms including aquatic invertebrates.
- Proven ability to design and execute complex experiments independently. - Excellent analytical skills and proficiency in data analysis software and statistical methods. - Strong organizational and time management skills.- Ability to lead and contribute to the preparation of scientific reports, manuscripts, presentations, and grant proposals under the guidance of mentors.
