    The School of Industrial and Labor Relations at Cornell University has an opening for a Research Support Specialist C06 for the Global Labor Institute in the NYC Extension/Outreach Division.


    Our Team:


    The Global Labor Institute (GLI) at Cornell University's ILR School is dedicated to independent research and action on a new generation of strategies that the evidence says can produce better outcomes for large numbers of workers in global production.


    What we are seeking:
    This term position will execute research and support management of research projects for GLI.

    Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
    * contributing to research (desk and field) and summaries for research projects and publications,

    * managing grant and contract process including contracts with external researchers; educational outreach communication management,

    * organizing project events (in-person and online),

    * collaborate with directors on project planning and administration,

    * support the research functions of GLI and its programs, and contribute to independent research projects, collaborate with ILR faculty, staff, and ILR students on ongoing applied and academic research projects that involve both quantitative (collecting and analyzing data) and qualitative research (desk research and literature reviews),

    * comprehensive knowledge of global labor governance issues,

    * assist in the design of research methods,

    * creation of research tools, data analysis,

    * creation of visual presentations and reports,

    * co-author research reports and policy papers, media articles, and supervise work of undergraduate student fellows,

    * assist in the preparation of grant and funding proposals,

    Required to attend and present at conferences, workshops, and public events related to GLI's work.

    This position contributes to achieving successful project execution and demands the ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritize work on simultaneous projects, and to work successfully with minimal supervision within a fast-paced, geographically dispersed team.

    Ideal for a pre-doctoral experience.

    This is a one-year term, full-time, bargaining unit position that falls under the NYC ILR Extension exempt CWA contract. Initial appointment through June 30, 2025, position may be reappointed with approval based on available funding and work.


    The position is based in the Cornell University, New York City ILR Extension office located at 570 Lexington Ave, New York, NY 10022.

    What we need:

    • Bachelor's degree in industrial relations, economics, public policy, sociology or related field and two to four years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience
    • Must have domain knowledge, specifically knowledge regarding labor practices in global supply chains.
    • Prior experience conducting research and drafting written materials (for a variety of audiences) in the relevant domains is essential.
    • Quantitative research skills including demonstrated ability to collect data using standardized instruments, conduct statistical data analysis and generate visuals.
    • Experience writing research reports/manuscripts for publication using appropriate style guides.
    • Experience with editing documents and research reports for publication.
    • Ability to prepare presentations, including creating PowerPoint slides.
    • Experience in translating research/evaluation for a general audience.
    • Experience with project management/administration, preferably in an academic setting
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills including experience in academic research and writing methods, and media/communications and marketing.
    • Demonstrated ability to plan, develop, manage, implement and monitor projects (including events) from conception to completion.
    • Must be able to work independently while supporting the efforts of an overall team.
    • Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills
    • Expertise with standard computer software including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel) and Adobe Acrobat.
    • Requires flexibility in work hours, including occasional evening or weekend with advance notice for event support.

    You will be a top candidate with our preferred qualifications:


    • Master's degree in Industrial Relations, Economics, Development studies, Public Policy, Sociology or related field.
    • Experience conducting field research in labor governance and global production.
    • Expertise with statistical analysis software such as SPSS, R and data visualization software.
    • Some knowledge of production-country languages (esp. Spanish as well as Chinese, Vietnamese, Bahasa Indo.)
    • Experience with project planning/management software such as MS Teams.
    • Prior experience working with HTML or other web development tools.
    Salary per CWA exempt bargaining unit contract: $62,400

    ILR Outreach appreciates employees by providing the opportunity for a nine day per month campus-to-home hybrid schedule.
