    Job Summary

    Under general supervision, the Registered Nurse II provides individualized, goal-directed patient care to families and patients at the competent level utilizing the principles and practices of the nursing process; delivers safe and effective care and interacts with other members of the health care team to achieve desired results.

    Peds Heart Center Overview

    The Peds Heart Center is a 29-bed Beacon Award-Winning unit and is the referral center for all major pediatric cardiac surgery in South Carolina. The unit cares for patients with congenital heart disease of any age based on care needs, including cardiac surgery, Ventricular Assist Devices, Heart Transplant, cardiac catheterization, and all medical diagnoses associated with cardiac care for children in South Carolina. In addition to ventilatory and cardiac support, the unit provides ECMO/CRRT and additional complex supportive therapies. Pediatric palliative care is available as needed. The staffing mix includes Registered Nurses, Patient Care Technicians, and Unit Secretaries with ancillary supportive services such as Respiratory Therapy, Pediatric Dietitians, and Pediatric Pharmacist available as needed. All beds are monitored beds.

    Requirements

    Bachelor of Nursing degree preferred. RN staff hired on or after July 1, 2013 with an Associate or Diploma degree in nursing are required to be enrolled in an accredited BSN program within two years and successfully obtain a BSN degree within four years of the RN hire or reclassification date. Refer to policy A141 for more details. A minimum of one year of work experience as a registered nurse required. Licensure as a registered nurse by the South Carolina Board of Nursing or a compact state. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) required, either a certification from an American Heart Association (AHA) BLS for Healthcare Providers (or AHA recognized equivalent) or an American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider.

    Physical and Mental Requirements

    The ability to perform job functions while standing, sitting, walking, climbing stairs, working indoors and outdoors, working from elevated areas, working in confined/cramped spaces, performing gross motor activities with fingers and hands, performing firm grasping with fingers and hands, reaching overhead, performing repetitive motions with hands/wrists/elbows and shoulders, fully using both legs, using lower extremities for balance and coordination, reaching in all directions, lifting and carrying 50 lbs. unassisted, lifting/lowering objects 50 lbs. from/to floor from/to 36 inches unassisted, exerting up to 50 lbs. of force, maintaining 20/40 vision, corrected, in one eye or with both eyes, seeing and recognizing objects close at hand or at a distance, matching or discriminating between colors, determining distance/relationship between objects, good peripheral vision capabilities, maintaining hearing acuity, performing gross motor functions with frequent fine motor movements, dealing effectively with stressful situations, working rotating shifts, working overtime as required, working in a latex safe environment, maintaining tactile sensory functions, maintaining good olfactory sensory function, and being qualified physically for respirator use.
