    Description of Work

    The Entomology lab at the Panhandle Research, Extension and Education Center in Scottsbluff, NE works to address research questions in applied ecology and integrated pest management in agricultural cropping systems and to share that expertise with Nebraskans.

    As the Crop Insect Pest Research Technician, you will:
    • Assist with field, greenhouse, and lab research including planting, spraying, fertilizing, harvesting, data collection, maintenance of research equipment, and data entry.
    • Maintain field plots by monitoring pests, disease and fertility regimes.
    • Establish and maintain colonies of desired arthropods and plants to be used for experiments.
    • Maintain lab and greenhouse space to meet research needs.
    • Operate farm machinery including tractors, mowers, sprayers, trucks, and 4-wheelers.
    • Responsible for management of lab supply inventory, equipment schedules, pesticide inventory and maintaining a clean and organized workspace.
    • Coordinate and support students, interns, postdocs and their research projects.
    • Assist in coordination with collaborators at the Panhandle Research, Extension and Education Center.
    Irregular hours and work in inclement weather required. Position requires obtaining an EPA Non-Commercial Pesticide Applicator's License within six months of employment. Within the UNL system, this position is categorized as an Ag Research Technician II.

    Minimum Required Qualifications
    • Associate degree in entomology, agronomy, plant & soil science, horticulture, biology, or related field; plus two (2) years of experience in crop protection, production, or related field required; additional relevant education or experience may substitute on a year-for-year basis.
    OR
    • High school diploma plus four (4) years of experience in crop protection, production, or related field.
    • Knowledge and/or experience in general plant care in greenhouse and farm operations.
    • Experience must demonstrate good organizational and problem-solving skills, and the ability to be trained for new skills required for research.
    • Effective communication skills and ability to work in team settings.
    • Valid driver's license and ability to meet University driver eligibility requirements.
    • Ability to obtain EPA Non-Commercial Pesticide Applicator's License within 6 months of employment.
    Preferred Qualifications
    • Bachelor's degree in entomology, agronomy, plant & soil science, horticulture, biology, or related fields preferred but not required.
