    About the Position:

    Description

    The City of Roanoke is seeking a Solid Waste Equipment Operator to operate automated side loader, knuckle boom and/or packer truck depending on route assigned. The successful candidate will function as the primary point of contact with citizens concerning solid waste, recycling and bulk/brush issues. Drivers service over 900 residential and/or business locations per day. Customer service is essential. Must be able to read maps and logically plan most efficient route. Must be knowledgeable about city code and policy requirements and be able to articulate and tactfully explain city policy/code requirements to citizens. Must be able to abate hydraulic spills and follow procedures if a chemical reaction occurs in the truck. Drivers are responsible for recording and reporting operation, maintenance and repairs needed to ensure equipment is operable; should be familiar with City safety rules and regulations, occupational hazards and safety precautions; Federal and state safety laws and regulations, including drug and alcohol testing guidelines for CDL; local and regional traffic patterns, road systems, and the locations of landmarks and buildings. Requires a high school diploma or general education degree (GED); possession of a valid commercial driver's license Class B with air brake; 2-3 years of experience as CDL A/B with experience in city driving making multiple stops and or a route with multiple stops per day; experience in solid waste management preferred. ; 2-3 years of customer interaction experience required.

    Examples of Duties

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES may include the following depending on area of assignment. Other duties may be assigned.

    Drives and operates automated side loader, knuckle boom and/or packer truck depending on route assigned.

    Must be able to read maps and logically plan most efficient route.

    Functions as the primary point of contact with citizens concerning solid waste, recycling and bulk/brush issues.

    Must be knowledgeable about city code and policy requirements and be able to articulate and tactfully explain city policy/code requirements to citizens.

    Must be able to abate hydraulic spills and follow procedures if a chemical reaction occurs in the truck.

    Discuss job requirements and receives directions from supervisor.

    Maintains accurate log sheets and checklists.

    Operates heavy and light equipment in snow removal.

    Inspects equipment for proper safety and ensures that truck is equipped with all necessary equipment for the day's assignment (i.e. pitchforks, functional radios, brooms, dust pans, toter barrels, spill kit, water cooler, first aid kit, safety flares, etc.).

    Trains and instructs sanitation workers.

    Knowledge of pertinent rules and regulations, guidelines, safety orders, departmental operating procedures and safety regulations sufficient to insure that work is performed in compliance with applicable law.

    Follows safety rules/procedures; avoid known hazards in the work environment.

    Safety first. Places avoidance of injury or property damage above all other job requirements.

    Follows established safety procedures.

    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
    May supervise 1-2 sanitation workers. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsible for the safety and customer interaction of the sanitation workers.

    EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
    High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and two to three years' experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.

    Supplemental Information

    LANGUAGE SKILLS
    Ability to read and interpret documents such as maps, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to communicate effectively and tactfully with citizens and coworkers. Experience in providing customer service to customers and or citizens.

    REASONING ABILITY
    Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

    CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
    Requires possession of appropriate Class B commercial driver's license with air brake endorsement issued by the state of Virginia.
