    • Grid Modernization Planning to lead a portfolio of high impact research activities at the intersection of advanced analytics, modeling, and policy to enable a decarbonized, reliable, and resilient power system.
    A primary role of the Principle Power Systems Engineer will be serving as the principal investigator for a newly formed Grid Center for Reliable Electricity Decarbonization (GridCRED) that will provide science-based, stakeholder-informed policy and decision support to regional grid planners and operators.

    The position will involve defining research priorities and shaping the technical strategy for regional grid analytics planning and co-optimization / co-planning of regional electric, gas and communication systems; engaging innovators to test and evaluate new analytic tools and methods to inform regional grid planning; establishing a new model for industry-government collaboration on the data acquisition, use and sharing; and embracing participative community processes that promote energy equity and environmental justice through research and policy.

    Responsibilities Researches, develops, designs, and tests electrical/electronic systems, components, equipment, and networks as well as their control and optimization theory and techniques.

    Adapts and applies control theory to design electrical/electronic systems with desired behaviors. Designs, develops, installs, and supervises all aspects of control systems and processes. Determines design approaches and parameters. Analyzes equipment to establish operating data, conducts experimental tests, and evaluates results. Selects components and equipment based on analysis of specifications and reliability.

    Researches, develops, and applies tools, simulations, and models of electric power systems and components addressing problems in planning, operations, economics, resilience, and optimization of system performance.

    Designs and develops new techniques and methodologies for control and integration of diverse energy resources and points of consumption.

    Develops and applies system architectures, models, and technologies for secure and reliable electric power systems and related technologies such as communications systems and grid cyber security.

    Specific responsibilities of the Principle Power Systems Engineer include:
    + Use deep technical expertise to establish new approaches and state-of-the art concepts at the convergence of modeling, analytics, and policy for grid modernization planning. + Leading the capture of funding to develop new research opportunities and partnering across a broad set of program offices in the Department of Energy, State of Washington, and other state and federal agencies. + Leading scoping, scheduling, and budgeting of complex projects and programs. + Providing technical leadership to multi-disciplinary teams in the execution of those projects involving multi-scale system modeling, application of advanced computing, power market design, and energy policy, to develop new decision support tools and actionable information. + Leading the development of high-impact publications and technical reviews that establish the foundational aspects of new models for grid planning. + Collaborating with researchers and teams from other national laboratories. + Representing the laboratory in partnerships with regional grid planning stakeholders and interest groups, including utilities, tribes, energy NGOs, regulators, and technology providers in the Pacific Northwest and in other regions of the county. + Mentoring other mid- and early-career staff members. + Travel to execute projects, build relationships, and maintain leadership in the field.


    Qualifications Minimum Qualifications:
    + BS/BA and 9+ years of relevant work experience OR + MS/MA and 7+ years of relevant work experience OR + PhD with 5+ year of relevant experience

    • Grid Modernization Planning is a technical leadership position that requires deep theoretical knowledge and experience addressing technical challenges associated with multi scale energy system modeling, the operational challenges with distributed energy resource integration at scale, and understanding of the evolving energy market, policy, and regulatory landscape.
    The selected candidate will be future leaning, capable of thinking through how decisions today will impact the grid of the future, and a skilled interdisciplinary problem solver.


    Preferred qualifications include:
    + Advanced degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or Engineering, Systems Engineering or a related technical field. + Possesses the ability to broadly apply principles, standards, theories, and concepts of systems engineering to the development and implementation of new tools including applications, algorithms, models, and visualization techniques. + Nationally recognized for thought leadership in grid modernization planning and/or policy concepts with active participation in national forums for power systems. + In-depth understanding of power grid operations and planning. + Knowledge of utility industry economics and business processes. + Experience leading the large technical teams. + Exceptional communication skills with a track record of effectively translating complex technical concepts to policymakers, planners, and other decision-makers. + Experience developing large-scale research proposals. + Extensive professional network within the power systems engineering, utility, and/or energy regulatory community. + Experience using and contributing to the development of large-scale power system models.
