    Neurocritical Care Physician

    Job Summary

    The Division of Neurosurgery at Denver Health Medical Center (DHMC) is seeking a BC/BE neurointensivist to serve in our surgical and medical intensive care units. Denver Health is a nationally-recognized Level 1 trauma center with a 23-bed trauma/surgical ICU, 24-bed medical ICU, and 10-bed pediatric ICU. The neurointensivist will provide co-management on all neurocritically ill patients in the trauma/surgical ICU, and neurocritical care consultation for medical and pediatric ICU teams. The aim of the division is to increase the neurocritical care group to three full-time intensivists, and will play an essential role in building the Neurocritical Care program at DHMC in a high-intensity semi-open staffing model, while working towards the creation of a dedicated neurointensive care unit and accreditation as a primary stroke center. Candidates with an interest in neurotrauma, experience managing complex neurosurgical issues, and resident/APP and fellow education are strongly encouraged to apply, as well as candidates with interest in clinical research, ICU quality improvement and program-building. DHMC is a major teaching affiliate of the University of Colorado School of Medicine, and the position includes full-time academic appointments in the University of Colorado Departments of Neurology and Neurosurgery.

    Clinical responsibilities:

  • Approximately 36 service weeks per year (50% neurotrauma service, 50% neurocritical care consult)
  • Weekend coverage 1-2x per month and shared after-hours home call, average ~10 nights/month
  • Supervise neurosurgery APPs, neurosurgery, neurology, surgery and emergency residents in management of neurocritically ill patients
  • Co-management of isolated head and spine injuries, intracerebral hemorrhage in the surgical ICU
  • Co-management of patients with severe polytrauma or other medical critical illness requiring admission to MICU or SICU, and for pediatric TBI and anoxic brain injury
  • Participate in resident and fellow education at Denver Health and the University of Colorado School of MedicineEducation and Training:
  • All applicants must possess an MD or DO from an accredited medical school
  • Has completed US or equivalent residency in neurology or neurosurgery
  • Subspecialty fellowship training from an accredited fellowship in neurocritical care
  • Applicant should be board-certified or board-eligible in neurocritical care by intended start dateSalary:

    $274,900 - $355,900

    Knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Management of severe TBI, refractory intracranial hypertension, neurologic prognostication, intracerebral hemorrhage/ischemic stroke
  • Competence in ventilator management, pressor and inotrope management, ECMO
  • Procedural skills: Competence in central line placement, arterial line placement, intubation, bronchoscopy, lumbar puncture, EEG interpretation. Potential for training in EVD, ICP monitor, and lumbar drain placementApplicants can submit CV and Cover Letters to:
